Trying to post my previous posting info about construction,hope it helps

Fiber glass is a very old material for skylights

* It becomes very brittle in long run
* The strength is very less
* Hard and breaks if turned in smaller radius
* Can’t avoid heat penetration
* If breaks leaves sharp edges


The best material to use is polycarbonate sheets (a very high grade plastic)

* Its life time almost 15 to 20 years
* Much stronger than any material, breaking with hammer is almost impossible.
* It doest break , you can only tare it with pvc heaters
* Easy to make any kind of shapes
* Available in monoliths , seamless ,easy to maintain, no water leaks, readily available in standard sizes
* Avoid heat penetration due to flutes structure, it’s a combination of two layers with gaps in between, hollow acts as good insulator
* Gives you smooth light rather sharper light
* Available in various colors, thickness, grades, designs etc……
* Gives you diffused lighting effect.
* Will cost you in the range of 100/- to 200/- per sft for sheet, grill work and installation will cost another 100/- per sft

sky lights are natural lighting units provided in the last slab, so u get lighting from top.
Like the big dome in forum mall ,right above the central atrium .

I am looking for a transparent material which i need to put in the duct which allows full sunlight and prevent water and dust from entering .. can you please suggest some options? is there any material which applifies or scatter the sunlight so that i can get more light inside ....

your suggestion would be really really nice !

Please visit the Market near town hall ,there are plenty of shops for roofing solution. There are polycarbon sheet starting from 22 rs to 250 Rs, depends on quality.

thanks Praveen, Sam_m400, I didn't know about polycarbonate sheets and I was thinking of using glass or acrylic sheet, every vendor I spoke to kept giving incorrect information.

I am looking for setting up simple sloped skylight for staircase headroom. like the one here, size will be around 6.5ftx10ft

How will polycarbonate sheet fitted to the grill? if it is drilled to the grill, wont the water leak inside through the holes?

No leaks will come ,as they put fabricated rods and lay the poly carbonate sheet above it with screws with gap filled with washers. They are same as what we fit for absetos sheet, only difference here for poly carbon we need to do fabrication where cost is more but get good lighting. There are readymade skylight also available in market townhall nearby whhich you can fix directly in the concrete plastering its end with cement. I have seen in some houses like that .

I got one contact from Justdial, he is asking for Rs. 210/SQFT for grill and polycrobonate sheet, I will check in market as you mentioned.

My current rental home has polycarbonate covering the skylight (maybe half the size of the picture that you sent) in the staircase area. When it rains it makes a lot of noise. When birds walk/perch it will make noise. So beware.
