Solution for the Ground floor houses to escape from Heat
Dear Praveen
Need a very cheap and all possible solution to escape from the Heat
Our House is constructed only on the groound floor on a 30x40 plot south facing, and is not sorrounded by any house on all the three sides causing too much of heat inside the house during summer as its heated on both the sides of house and also on the top added to that there are no trees
We donot have any plan right now( for another at least 5 year) to construct the first floor
Can you pls suggest how to escape from the heat from summer with some solution

First of all, start planting some tree for long term solution. Immediate short term solution, you can go far mangalore tiles placed on 4 steel pillars that can also be used as Sit out/Balcony. but its not cheap.

I agree with bengaluru boy, plant trees as longterm plan. For immediate solutions you can paint the terrace with cool white cements available in market.
lay mangalore tiles just like that on the roof with out sticking them to slab(cost effective).Go for palm/coconut leaves mandap on the roof.use green perforated cloth (used in plant nursery)on the south side for shading.

Re: Solution for the Ground floor houses to escape from Heat
keep several potted plants distributed around the terrace - this cools down the house quite a bit. If possible (meaning your roof is designed for that load) and your budget permits - develop a roof garden. Not only will your house cool down, you get clean fresh air, and the greenery will be a great stress reliever and based on the plants you select - you can even have fruits and vegetables to harvest from them.

Would suggest you could go for hollow terracotta tile blocks arranged symmetrically on your roof, with the last row on both sides (East-West) open so that there is air circulation through the tiles preventing the heat build up. Also, you could spray water on the top of your roof at around 6pm and 11am. This gives some temp relief!!
And plant trees for your kids!!

Terrace Garden is a good option, provided the roof is having good water proofing, else water seepages inside/into walls. Also load is a concern. Generally those who have plans of Terrace garden goes for 10" thickness RCC Roofing.

The Cheapest solution we had for our home was to get the cocnut leaves spread across the roof and place some pots and plants on the roof.....Our home is now like airconditioned one.

Re: Solution for the Ground floor houses to escape from Heat
Hi All
Our house which is 20 years old and has a inverted V shape concrete roof ( "/\" ) not a flat one.
At the time of roofing there is no weathering (surukki or weathering done using the broken mud bricks) done. Hence we are facing sever heat inside the house in the afternoon and night.
We tried the heat reflecting paint and it worked for 2 years and now again we are under lot of heat.
I am looking for some what permenant solution than the solutions like paining or having putting the net mat over the roof etc.
I also dont have an option of having plants or putting shells/mud pots over the roof as it is slanting roof with 45%.
Please suggest
