Water proofing of roof

Post by Brinda »

Hello All,

What are the benefits of waterproofing the roof ? Currently after renovation we realised that the our roof was provided with necessary slope and water clogging was observed . Can these issues be addressed when getting our terrace water proofed ? Any recommendations of people who do a thorough and quality job on this front ?

If waterproofing is not done, water can get into roof slab and will corrupt the steel, there by reducing its life..

Water flow level mismatch cannot be solved using waterproofing.. the way to fix it is to use concrete or Maddi to bring in levelling

Once levelling is done, water proofing ensures that water doesn't seep thru concrete. You can call up dr fixit help desk. They will come and guide you with the right products to use

In your case as screeding and slope is already done you can paint roof with Asian Paint/ Dr. Fixait waterproofing paint. It's available in white and terracotta colours.
An additional advantage is white painted roof remains cooler.
Suppose if you are going to get the roof resurfaced or tiled you can give two coats of
BASF Masterseal 551 or Fosrock Brushbond at 90 degrees.
The advantage of waterproofing that ot seals cracks and prevent water seepage.

Actually I dont think the correct slope is provided. We didn't realise, until a few days back when there were heavy rains, and we noticed water logging. So we first need to address the problem of slope. And then think about waterproofing it. Is there any smart economical solution for this ?
Thank you for your inputs so far.

Sloping isn't a costly solution nor applying damp proof paint from Asian paints. Sloping is a day or 2 day work with 3-4 labourers. Painting another day job. There is no other smart and cheap solution otherwise. All other solutions are costly such as laying tiles etc.

If you are going to do screeding again for slope then waterproofing coat(atleast 2 coats perpendicular to each other with second coat applied a day after other ) should be done first.
To prevent cracks you can apply 100 gsm geotextile fabric when waterproof coat is wet. 100 meter roll costs approx 5000 rs.
Screeding and slope should be done on top of this.
Use cinders as filler to give right slope and weight on roof light after slopinf screed is done surfacing with cement slurry should be done and the screed should be cured for 4-5 days by spreading jute /gunny textile kept wet.

Estimate around 1 - 1.5 week for all the above depending on size of roof

Thank you so much for your inputs. How much you estimate for about 1000sqft ? And also any places you could recommend ?

In my estimate for waterproof coat around 35 rs per square feet with BASF Masterseal 551 alone. If you want elastomeric membrane (more streach tolerance then BASF 551 or Fosrock brushbond) 55 rs per square feet.

Including cleaning grinding and labour.

For screeding/slope it depends on material and amount of slope to be given.

The screeding cost is always higher and suppose masons can apply slope correction to the surface you already have by chipping and doing patchwork. Painting at top by either EMB ( star EMB or BASF EMB or Asian Paint EMB) would be better.
Dr Fixit / Asian paint waterproofing coat if you want aesthetics.however performance of EMB is better but it looks ugly as it is rough black.looks like coal tar.
