Granite Laying

Hi,

I have purchased 2x7 granite slabs. Layer says he can lay 2x7 slabs and thus reduce the number of joints (as against 2 slabs of 2x3.5). Is there any disadvantage in using larger slabs for laying? does it increase scope for air gaps below the slabs and cause problems long-term?

2x 7 guess this for kitchen, if you have support below in form of complete cabinet box then its better with larg slabs. But if you are laying with just supports at end then intermediate support is advised.

I have recently got my kitchen counter top which are 8.5 x 2 ft and 5 x 2 ft slabs in L Shape single peices.
Single slab looks clean , neat , no issues of joining.

I don't think he is talking about kitchen counter top as there is no issue of air gap in such an application. Any idea abou the thickness of the 2 x 7 slab?

Laying large slabs of 7' can be done,but need to be careful .The other problem is that your joints wouldn't be uniform in a room.If the first slab joint is at 7' next can be at 3.5' or 4' or 5' depending up on room size.Uneven joints wouldn't look good at all.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

The thickness of slabs vary from 18 to 20mm. I have asked the layer to arrange the stones and show it to me (to see where joints would come) before laying.

Based on advice received in this forum, I asked the contractor lay granite, spread newspapers and then lay PoP. he says after drying, sometimes air gap is formed between newspaper and granite and that makes PoP break easily like a papad. He wants to lay it directly on granite. Another alternative he gave is to use poly vinyl sheets taped at edges with gum tape. Will choose between PoP and PV sheets based on cost difference.

Granite laying has been done and PoP poured on it (no newspapers). Joints have come out well. i.e., not very obvious. I hope the workers do not damage the granite with their carelessness while shifting materials.
