Teak Wood Seasoning

Post by ssrhyd »

Dear All,
I happened to harvest Teak Wood from my farm yesterday and not sure how to season the logs. They were planted 12 year ago, The logs are about 1 ft in Diameter and have cut them to 8ft & 4ft logs, intend to use it for Door & Window frames. I am also wondering if need to season them as logs or take it to saw mill and cut it to my requirement. Google was not of much help. Any advise on stocking/seasoning would be appreciated. Also note that wood should be ready to use in 3-6 months. Presently awaiting transport permit from forest dept and wood is for own use.

Regards,
Soundar

you need to cut them into required sizes for seasoning. plane it a month before use. logs cannot be seasoned.

Hi Soundar,
Logs cannot be seasoned even if you leave it for another 12 years :) .You need to cut to standard sizes and store them with good air flow ( google "wood stacking for air seasoning" ). You need to leave the cut pieces at least for 2-3 years for sections of 3"-4" thick ( standard 25mm thck needs 3-6 months based of wood type ).

Make sure there is good security arrangements for the stacked wood pieces.

the duration which it takes to season is dependent on lot of conditions. properly stacked ,in current bangalore environment ,in my opinion 2 to 3 months is good enough to bring the moisture level to a satisfactory level. loosing too much moisture is also damaging to wood .
if you are in a hurry go for vacuuum kiln drying, will be done in 15 to 20 days.
