Skylight Area Covering

Post by venkyn »

We have built a skylight opening with pargola on the roof top.
I am in dilemma on what kind of covering should I go. I have few options.

The Skylight Area is of 8feet x 8feet. so, woundering the approach tthat needs to be taken.
To get 8x8 feet glass to third floor is very costly so, planning 4 frame Aluminium structure.

- Laminated Glass with Grill on top of it
- Laminated Glass without Grill on top
- Tioughned Glass

Please share your thoughts on cost, security and safty.

Regards,
Venky

Safety wise, you have a grill in place, so should be no issues.

TOughened glass would be better. Ensure that you keep your glass at a slanting angle, so that water drain off from the top

Since Pergola is closely spaced, Safety should not be an issues.
You could go for 8x8 Solid polycorbonate sheet on tope of it. Costs about 60 psft. It will have glass like looks. But it cannot bear the load of person standing on it.

Other better option will be Hardenned glass but it will be very expensive. Costs more than 20K.

The Skylight dimension happens to 8x8 feet. to Get 8x8feet carried and installed on to the top is very difficult. We will spend more on transportation then
glass so, we rethink on the design. there is a separate frame installed which support 3x2 four frames like a + mark on the top.

On the top of that frame there will be a 4 glass sitting on it. Currently, we are using polycorbonate sheet temporarly.

we have skylight similar to this 15X5

we ahve used grill and 12mm toughened glass, we walk many time on that glass to crossover to other side. one issue we have is/design flaw is. the overhang glass should be extended bit more. and please include a some kind of thickened edge (may be a small strip of glass piece) on underside to prevent water traversing back during heavy rain and dripping inside the house. we have this problem now whenever it rains (we have provide kind of ventilation for hot air to escape out, through which rain droplets seep inside)

not sure if explained correctly, will try to put some picture over the weekend
