Hi,

Thanks for a lot for posting your construction pics.... it is helping me a lot. I'm almost 2 weeks behind your construction schedule.
Just now, I have filled the sand in the foundation pit and poured water and waiting for it to settle down...

Btw, I have few questions....
Is your plinth beam is 8inch x 12 inch or 14 inch? It looks really big though! will your plinth beam be 2.5 feet above the ground level?
Also, what is the proportion of the concrete mixture used for the plinth beam? 1:3:4 ? 1 bag of cement; 3 bags of sand and 4 bags of jalli?

I purchased 0.5 HP motor Aluminium body Taro brand from Texmo Industries. They have 0.5,3/4 and 1 HP motors of Aluminium and Steel body. They are Authorized dealers of Texmo Industries in Bangalore. Enquire with them in advance.
All the best.

Thanks Balaji,

The plinth height is 2 feet in the front and 1.5 Feet other places. The beam width is 8inches contractor said the additional 2 inches will give help while constructing the walls to make them straight line. The problem that i have is the road is a down ward slope north to south hence we had to build a taller plinth beam so its 2 feet above the road level at the north end.
I am waiting for the filled mud to dry up to put 40MM jelly. The mix used by the contractor is 1:3:4.

@ Ramki, Thanks for the info, i will speak to the dealer tommorow.

Hi Martin,

Yours construction pics are giving me immense knowledge and with that many doubts also :). Had one basic question.
After your pillar work was completed, what is the procedure for laying the foundation stones(the big stones). Do we need to dig some depth and then place or how is it and how many courses do we need to put these stones?
And then after the big stones are placed, then only do we need to put the plinth beam? I'm asking this because, ours is West facing plot and our architect has given a plan where the sump is inside and outside. Meaning to say some part of the sump resides inside and some outside, the sump opening is provided outside the house. Thereby due to this plan, when i asked how about the strength for the wall which comes on the sump, he said that he will provide a beam. Thereby wanted to know, is this OK, and foundation for this wall doesn't effect building strength if we construct top floors later?

Thanks,
Ramki

Thanks Ramki,

I agree photos gives a good idea, However this is the construction technique used my contractor might not be the best method and purely based on his experience, I get few of these thing validated by my uncle who is into construction in Kerala.

First part of your question on Foundation stones: In my case the foundation stones the bigger once were place above the ground where the external walls would come, There was no digging done,
This was two coarse. Above this we place the plinth beam this was 2 feet height in the front and 1 ½ Feet other places this was mainly as the site was in a slope. We had to get the overall surface flat. ( I guess the height would depend on the final height that you’re looking at your house from ground level).
Some places like where the External staircase would be built the Foundation stones were put from 2 ½ feet below ground level. Next to the sump the foundations stone were built to the house level. Places where the internal partition walls would come there were no foundation stones put only two coarse of 40 MM jelly was put over that plinth beam was placed.
What I understand from Contractor is the load is taken by the Pillar and beam.

Second part of your question: Even I have a west facing site I had the same issue as yours the Sump part of it would come inside the house and part of it between house wall and external wall and one of the pillar would be in the middle of the sump and Plinth beam going across the sump. I did discuss with few people. What I was told is that pillar needs to be 2 to 4 inches thicker till the house level and proper water proofing needs to be done.
However I was a little worried as the pillar would constantly be under water, hence I reduced the size of the sump and made it completely inside the house.

I have a pic of the foundations stones being built next to the sump

Thanks
Martin

Thanks very much Martin for the clear picture of foundation work.
So, then if my architect wants to put a beam on the sump, in other places of foundation if he places big stones for 2 ft(height) for external walls, then the plinth beam on the sump will be around 4 feet in height !!! Need to discuss this with my architect.
Also, what are the different drawings does an Architect and Structural engineer needs to provide me before construction?

Thanks,
Ramki

The foundation wall is only to prevent rodents and other such elements from entering into the site. It doesn't provide any strength. It also prevents the plinth beam from direct contact with soil. You don't have to vary the height of the beam inside the sump. Thanks.
