11000 ltrs sump construction
11000 ltrs sump construction
Hi,
I have completed construction of sump at my site which is more than 11000ltrs. The dimensions inside the sump are length 102 inch, breadth 88 inch and depth 80 inch. I had plans for 10000ltrs and roughly made them to excavate based on volume calculations. As I have seen KVS Setty's post of his sump, it helped me to overcome the shuttering issue on the inner side.
step 1: excavated the soil 10 inch more than required on all sides. Then made them to put 40mm jelly concrete and compress it with dhimsu(don know it's proper name in english)
step 2: I made a 6" cement block wall all around like below.
step 3: 10 mm rods all around the sump.
step 4: concreted all around with shuttering for 4" retaining wall and 53 grade cement and waterproofing liquid. (sorry i have no pic with shutters)
Step 5: plastering all around with ppc cement and waterproofing liquid
I had been in person for all steps and arrived late while plastering. To my luck I found they had made plastering with 53 grade cement on all sides. I made them remove all those as it was still wet and remade the plastering with ppc cement. My advice to all owners is to instruct them in detail what to do and what not to.
Kindly let me know how I can paint the inner walls of sump with some waterproof-food grade paint you are aware of.
Thanks,
Bharath

Re: 11000 ltrs sump construction
bharath one question ? if you are building a rcc sump what was the need for that brick wall ?
Re: 11000 ltrs sump construction
Dear Bharath;
Did you use steps (3-4 nos.) for climbing down/up for cleaning purpose?
I am also looking for info post plastering waterproofing paint. Already 6 month is over for my sump construction and house construction under progress.
regards
Sahu

Re: 11000 ltrs sump construction
i would also like to know whether there is a waterproofing paint that can be used for sump tank. any pointers?
Re: 11000 ltrs sump construction
Sorry for late reply.
@Ausraja, The need for brick wall is to act like even shuttering all around for the concrete and another reason is to have double protection for the RCC sump.
@sahu.mgse, I had bought the steps to climb inside the sump but I did not want to make a hole or drill in concrete to fix them. Even If i fix the steps to wall while shuttering it may have small cracks on sudden impact to the steps. I have thought to put a thin SS ladder and hang it to the sump lid frame. I would post the pic once it's done.
@tendlu, my architect told that there is a kind of foodgrade waterproof paint which can be used for sump. I will share the same info while i'm doing it.
Thanks for going through this post. I love the way this forum helped me in construction.
Thanks,
Bharath

Re: 11000 ltrs sump construction
Hello Bharath,
You are right for the sump steps, that's why even I have not put any steps and planning to use SS
or heavy duty plastic ladder during cleaning, other times it will be kept some where else and not in the sump.
For inner surface finish I am going with tiles like the one used in swimming pools.
You did a good job for the shuttering problem using a block wall and serving a extra layer of protection for the retaining wall.
Thanks

Re: 11000 ltrs sump construction
Hi Kvs Setty,
First of all thanks for posting your entire house construction details step by step. Ask your mason if he can make smooth walls with cement powder only and you can paint a food grade waterproofing paint. Tiles would be a bit expensive affair for you and you need to seal all the four sides of tiles without any leak.(i'm not an expert just my guess on tiles.). It took two complete bags of cement just to smooth-en the walls of my sump. underground sumps would be clean for long time as it is covered and no sunlight can enter. one more thing, if you have a need to fill the sump from a tanker, you can make a provision of making a hole on top mould and run a 4inch pipe by roadside (like chimney) for tankers to fill in that pipe.Usually tankers would have 3inch pipes near my area.
Thanks,
Bharath

Re: 11000 ltrs sump construction
Hi baruc2003,
First of all congrats on starting the construction of your home.
Secondly, thanks very much for posting pics of sump construction. As they say a pic is equal to 1000 words.
Thirdly, thanks again, for providing detail description of construction of the sump. I plan to construct a home in November this year and this has helped me immensely. Thanks very much for this.
If time permits, kindly also post pics of your further construction along with your description, which would be of great help to me/us.
Thanks,
Ramki

Re: 11000 ltrs sump construction
Hi Ramki,
Thanks for your comments. Sure I would post more pics of my construction with more details to help people who are constructing on labour contract.
I have completed the plinth and the mould for the sump along with plinth. I have used 10 mm rods for moulding the sump.
You can source ready-made tank lids which work out cheaper than making one on your own.
Thanks,
Bharath

Hi Bharath,
In other thread you mentioned about ROBO sand. Did you use ROBO sand for sump as well ? I guess not
Whats your final take on ROBO sand ?
Thanks
