Any experience about hunsur teak for doors and windows

Hi All,
Did any body has used hunsur teak for doors and windows? If it is so what is your experience? Yesterday i have got a quote of about 2.3k / cft. this person directly supplies from hunsur. one of my neibhour right now purchased from him for his g+2 building.

Nowadays many of the north Indian based carpenters doesn't even heard about Hunsur Teak woods.
They are more familiar with Burma, Bhutan based Teak woods.

So only an experienced Carpenter from Mysore- Bangalore region can give you merits/demerits about Hunsur Teak WOod.

As I heard, Hunsur Teak wood is more harder than other kind of Teak woods and need more effort & time to make carpentry work.

Thanks for your reply. That means hunsur teak is stronger than other teaks?I have noticed more number of knots on this teak. I feel because of this reason cost is cheaper.

As per my understanding, teak from Hunsur and also from Dandeli are very good in quality they have more oil inside, and more knots, their girth is lesser compared to Burma teak,hence there will be more wastage.
Secondly it is very difficult to get the teak from Hunsur as forest department only auction those woods and cannot be get in open market, their prices are normally higher than Burma teak, if you are getting at cheaper rate, pls check properly before buying

In India, teak is abundantly found in Balarsa in Maharashtra, Hunsur, Mysore & Dandeli in Karnataka, Valsad in Gujarat and parts of Kerala. Teak of each of these locations has its own unique properties; for eg; Maharashtra teak is known for its superior grains, Karnataka teak for its high oil content, Gujarat teak for both superior grains and good oil content. Kerala teak is second in quality compared to other locations and is therefore economical and preferred for bulk consumption.

If we knew the strong features of our local Hunsur teak, Mysore teak, Dandeli teak and Nagpur teak, we wouldn't crowd the furniture shops where China and Malaysian lighter versions are stacked up to meet the demands.

The idea is to educate people about the characteristics of wood that is locally available, and one needn't pay transportation costs too for the import, especially when the local variety is strong and durable.

Teak is royal timber since ancient times. Mature teak is durable as it is water repellent and immune to rotting, fungi and harsh chemicals. Grown in tropical areas of the world like Thailand, Myanmar and India, its natural inherent oil protects it in cold and wet weather, and repels acids too. Treating it with teak oil protects it further, say market experts. “It can withstand the heat of the desert, and yet not catch fire,” says the owners at Ahaa Furnitures, who conduct an informative and educative ‘Teak Festival' in the city. “Untreated teak, if left in the open without treatment for 30 years, gains a soft silver colour and will not be susceptible to termite attacks.”

The grains are closely knitted in this hard wood, making it cut-friendly or carve-friendly without getting sliced. Therefore, tenon joints, dovetail joints and finger joints come out in high degree of accuracy.

The material can cost0 lakhs depending on its age and maturity.

I very recently procured local teak wood for main door and Pooja door and one of the Pooja door windows ( including shutters along with frames). It costs around 3,500/CFT. I got this from a timber mill in Moodbidri, approx.. 30 KMs from Mangalore.

It’s a South Canara local teak, and timber mill guy had it for his personal use from last 8 years. I could convince him and get around my requirement of 80 CFT, I got a chance to choose from best logs he had, and get it sawn to my required sizes, and pay for the saw size. Plaining of cut pieces will cost extra (approx. 100/cft).

My dad is expert in this wood quality checks and all that, he says because it was lying in yard for almost 8 years, its seasoned very well, and also lost some amount of its oil content. After I transported it to Bangalore, I could see the major color change from whitish yellow of teak to a dark original yellowish color of teak in 2 days, because wood stared to absorb moisture from surroundings.
