Column Footing

Hi,

My contractor has started the construction in the first place he has dug 5 feet depth for pillar of 12 nos, so next step he is doing column footing, so I want to know whether there is specific process to be followed in footings, pls let me know your response early.

My contractor has used sunvik steel 16MM for 12 pillars, is this ok, pls give your advice. Early reply is appreciated.

Hi Prasanna
The question you asked is a very precautionary question.Its like asking doctor for medicine not to get fever.Any one in this forum can suggest only if you ask for specific problem.You didnt mention the site size or clolum span or slab size to comment on if 12 columns are sufficient or not.
how many rods of 16mm in each column ? what is the column size? what is the ring spacing used in column?

Hi Prasanna,
Before placing the column footing they will need to fill the pit with 5-6 inch of coarse concrete mixed with 3-4 inch stones and pound it to give a solid base on which the footing columns will rest. Make sure that the footing mat (steel rod mats) are resting about 2 inch above the concrete floor by resting on cover blocks (sometimes they just add stones for this purpose) so that concrete flows under the mat.

Also during concrete mixing make sure that the gang laborers don't add to much water. Water should not be more than 40-50% of cement being added. They generally pour too much water so that mixing happens fast and they can go home. But adding excess water weakens concrete and also separates jelly and sand as the jelly sinks to the bottom. The concrete mix should NOT be like soup but should be thick and just enough to flow when poured.

Also make sure that they use a pin vibrator to remove air gaps and to make sure that the concrete they pour settles into every corner of the footing & pedestal/column areas.
