Rain water purifier
Rain water purifier
Does anybody recently bought rain water purifier ? Which brand is nice and from where in SP road it is available ?
I have seen in some houses there filter connected in between the sump/RH pit and terrace collection pipe which cost around 2500 Rs wich is not softner i believe. I feel this filters only the dirts only not works as softner. How worth this ? ..
I was thinking to connect this filter between sump/RH , and connect a softner in the overhead tank inlet. Does anybody has used this ??????

RWH filter and Water softner are two different items.
RWH filters are only meant for removing solid/suspended particles.
Whereas Softner works on chemical process. if your area supplied
water is Hard, then you can install a softner at your Overhead tank.
I'm not clear why do you need a softner for RWH system. In any case,
You need to test the rain water in a lab to know whether it is a hardwater or not.

Re: Rain water purifier
thanks. I am anyway not planning to install softner before RH pit only filtering. This is what i am doing
Terrace Pipe collector->filter-> sump -> Softner->Overhead tank
----------------- -> RH pit -> discharge if overflows
Other idea is what discussed in forum by praveen/others to have two overhead tanks which can be used with softner so that we can reduce the capacity of softner being used
Terrace Pipe collector->filter-> sump -> Softner->1st Overhead tank->use for kitchen/potable purpose
--------------------------------------- -> 2nd Overhead tank->use for toilets/gardening/car wash/floor cleaning
-----------------------------------------> --> RH pit -> discharge out if overflows
but here we need two overhead tank.
1) Is softner and purifier the same?
2)Should we need softner with RO as i am having sump with Rain water+borewell water?
3) Which brand of filter is good ?. There is filter for 2500 rs which i have seeen ,it that good enough for filtering....How much maintenance is needed for this ?
4)Which brand of softner is good?

Re: Rain water purifier
Hi sam,
Rain water is purest form of soft water. you need rainy filter (fl-100->RWH filters )to remove solid/suspended particles. Rainy filter fl-100 is recommended for roof area upto 1000sqft. for more go for rainy fl-200
Whereas Softner works on chemical process.(using common rock salt). your borewell water will be Hard depends on TDS, then you can install a softner at your Overhead tank.
I have installed Rainy filter Fl-150 and directly connected to borewell. i bought it for Rs4300 in may2012 from
PALADI TRADING COMPANY
# 6, M.R.LANE,
S.J.P.ROAD 4TH CROSS,
BANGALORE-560002
PH: 22237069, 41248145
MOB:-9945278145
Dont buy Rs2500 they have assembled using pvc pipes and plastic mesh and its not effective and it will not last longer. according to me its just a showoff.
If you buy Rainy filter fl-100 or higher u will have stainless steel filter ss304 with 40micron mesh
You can visit this website for more details and if u click contact us button. there are lot of dealers around bangalore.

1) Is softner and purifier the same?
NO
2)Should we need softner with RO ?
you dont need softner with RO. just any filter(aquaguard, pureit with UF+UV) without RO will do.
2a)i am having sump with Rain water+borewell water?
U need RO with UF+UV+TDS control like kent
3) Which brand of filter is good ?. There is filter for 2500 rs which i have seen ,it that good enough for filtering....How much maintenance is needed for this ?
Rainy filters FL-100-higher ,Dont buy Rs2500 they have assembled using PVC pipes and plastic mesh and its not effective and it will not last longer. No maintenance just clean before monsoon. very easy cleaning no moving parts or salt needed. fix it and forget it
4)Which brand of softner is good?
It depends on your budget( Kent has softner and they have some local companies too. google it)
5)I was thinking to connect this filter between sump/RH
U can connect Rainy filter

Re: Rain water purifier
Hi,
I am also using RAINY FL-150 for my residential home. But this filter will remove debris ( small particles ), leaves etc - very good.
But it will not divert first flush ( i.e. first 5 to 10 mins of water will be mix with debirs, leaves and will be colored, after the roof is cleaned by rain , good water willl come out ). Hence diverting into sump for domestic use is questionable with any filter.
There is no good device for first flush ( i.e first flush diverter ).
Pouring rainwater directly into LIVE borewell is not advised in many forums ( may be dont know the logic ) and PIT is recommended.

Re: Rain water purifier
thanks for that input that really helps. I too will for that brand ? but do we need to to do for RAINLY FL-150. Is it jsut open and clean the debris?
That is why praveen has recommended in some other link for having separate sump for Rainwater which can be used for cleaing/toilet purpose , but having 2 sump in small space of is much difficult . Only way is to first flush the diverter having a value to RH pit ,then opening the valve for the sump. This everytime we need to do manually based on when rain comes which is practically not possible but have to live with it. Other way is to have trap in in the terrace pipe with very small holes so that only very very minute particles can pass through so that leaves, birds excretes, dirts will be caught in the terrace itself before passing to filter.
1. What is difference between purifier and softner?. Is purifier is being used anywhere
2.Is softner in built with filter as well or we need to buy that separately ?
3.Is different brands of RAINLY FL-150 or 100 is available or just one brand?. If multiple brands which is the best one?

Re: Rain water purifier
1. No manual intervention required for cleaning the debris from RAINY FL.( Using centrifugal force, the debris will automatically pass the filter and come out in drain outlet.
2. May be you can pass the filtered water to a rain water pit ( well type with rings ) near by to the bore well. I have provided the bypass valve one connecting to the rain water pit and one to the sump. During rainy season, ( if rainfall is continuous ) , i will change the valve which will go directly to sump ( rainwater ), otherwise, the by default the rainwater goes to the rain water pit ( water will sucked by the soil which will rejuvenate the borewell and underground soil )

Re: Rain water purifier
Hi sam,
. What is difference between purifier and softner?. Is purifier is being used anywhere
Water purifier is like aquasure crystal, kent maxx ,pureit or zeroB which purifies the water using UV+UF(no RO) meant for cauvery water or water directly from softner where TDS is (150-200)to remove floating particles, germs, bacteria makes fit for drinking and cooking directly.
where as RO+uf+uv+tds control like kent pearl or aquaguard protect plus which will control tds from (700-800) to (50-100). then uses UF+UV to remove floating particles, germs, bacteria makes fit for drinking and cooking directly.
Borewell water > overhead tank > softner > water purfier(no RO required)
Softner works on chemical process.(using common rock salt). using borewell water {Hard depends on TDS}( hard water, TDS 700-800) from overhead tank which makes water soft by reducing TDS( soft water TDS 150-200).
Borewell water ( TDS 700-800) hard, unfit for drinking, contains floating particles and silt, causes scaling on taps and tiles, less lather while showering and washing clothes.
Water from Softner (TDS 150-200) soft, unfit for drinking, contains floating particles,No scaling,More lather just like cauvery water
2.Is softner in built with filter as well or we need to buy that separately ?
No, You need to buy seperately it costs around 35-45k + common rock salt expense 50kgs every 3-5 months depending on the usage.
3.Is different brands of RAINLY FL-150 or 100 is available or just one brand?. If multiple brands which is the best one?
only Rainy filters from http://www.Rainyfilters.com but diff sizes. some other also available but local ones look for stainless steel filters.
AS mentioned by sanker
No manual intervention required for cleaning the debris from RAINY FL.( Using centrifugal force, the debris will automatically pass the filter and come out in drain outlet.
Rainy fl-100 comes with 2" gate valve for first flush.
What I do is after monsoon is close the gate valve , with onset of monsoon and after two big rain shower( avoid first two rains as it contains all pollutants, acids, etc and also to remove large and small debris, fine sand. so once or twice(depends on roof top condition)will do the flushing.
For thorough cleaning Note the gate valve is still closed.
TO take out the middle compartment(MC) of the filter where stainless steel filter and stagnant water is there.
Top compartment is permanently fixed to inflow from terrace and is meant to remove steel filter easily for Periodic cleaning.
After unscrewing the middle compartment(MC) ring ,HOSE CLAMP near gate valve and MC , two rubber straps on MC. The MC along with bottom compartment (drain pipe)will come out. u can clean the bottom surface thoroughly and also near gate valve where silt deposits by water pipe. assemble it back the open the gate valve first time for the rest of the monsoon.
even during monsoon if small amount silt will go to borewell or sump its unavoidable as Borewell water contains much coarse silt.cauvery water contains fine silt too.

Re: Rain water purifier
thanks for detailed reply...
1) insted of Borewell water > overhead tank > softner > water purfier(no RO required) , can we connect
Borewell water >sump-> softner->overhead tank > water purfier(no RO required) ?
2) so Rainy filter FL-150 - 4750 Rs
Softner mini 6000 to 46000 available in kent
Water purifiers - 15000+
so approximately it would cost 5000+35000+ 15000 = 55000 rs for full fledged water purification based on our demand.....
3) filter - > just removed the particles/dust in the water
softner -> removed the chemicals like calcium/magnesium with salt(sodium) . Conversion of hard water into soft water by exchange of hard salts of Calcium and Magnesium ions with Sodium using the table salt. It doesn't do UV+RO+tds etc
purifier - > again treating the water with UV+RO (optional)+Tds
Is my understanding correct?
4) I have seen borwell->sump->overhead tank->water purifier , HOw effective this is without softner with ony water purifier which cost only 15000 Rs instead of softner which cost 34000 though both the function is different? .
5) Is purifier can remove the chemicals like calcium/magnesium with salt(sodium) by RO+UV+tds technique where most people using this way without softner? i: e Borewell water >sump-> overhead tank > water purfier(no RO required) , is this can be connected?

Re: Rain water purifier
in RWH process, it is not advised to use the initial rain waters which comes in the middle of Summers/early monsoon generally.
It contains all the dust & chemicals accumulated in the terrace for the last 5-8 months, which is very unhygenic or toxic. It
should be directly released to outside/storm water drainage. That provision must be there in the plumbing to bypass the RWH
Filter manually.
Only after two or three rains, we need to start collecting the Rain Water.
