Hi all,

I am looking for a contractor to construct(with red bricks ,mesh and water proof plastering) an underground sump to store water.
what would be the approx cost for a 5000 ltr sump.

any other alternatives /suggestions are welcome.

Can we have ready made sintex underground tank instead of constructing a sump?would that work?

from what I know, brick sump will cost you around 7 to 8 rupee per litre and concrete 11 rupee

If you are looking to construct with clay/red brick, maestri can get it done
If you plan to construct concrete one, it will require bit of skill (bar bending and centring per specification) hence contractor will be more suitable

Some more information I am sharing here which I collected through my experience and from mybda forum,
1) If you do not have borewell go for big size sump, sump should be atleast 6k lit or more, so that one full Canter truck load can be unloaded. If the locality has water problem, plan to construct bigger one so that once you fillup the sump you can use it for 20 to 25 days
2) on an average each person will need 150 to 250 lit of water per day
3)I prefer concrete sump as once you get it done, you will not have any leakage problem in future, brick sump often have this problem, mostly from tree roots, building weight, car weight movement (if sump is under car parking). But getting 8" thick concrete sump wall is expensive business
4) I think Jollyroger or jackbda in this forum shared another idea which I think is innovative, he went for good quality concrete blocks instead of clay block and reduced the concrete wall thickness to 2 or 3 inches on the inside with steel rod support. I think this is best of both options

I am paying Rs.3/liter for red brick sump (only labour). RCC sump will be Rs.6/liter. I'm not sure if this is reasonable.
You may require around 2500-2800 red bricks to make 8'.5" * 7'.5" * 5'.5" sump which can hold about 9500-10,000 liters of water.
I bought 3000 red bricks at Rs.5.25 (Rs.16600), cement and sand to be calculated now.

What is nominal rate these days ?

Depends on the Contractor's definition of RCC Sump. One side Brick masonry and one side Concrete thin wall is a compromised design, they erect the sump with brick masonry with outer side unplastered and internally line with Rebar and cast a thin concrete wall . you have to ask yourself if this is a "RCC Sump" . The outerwall may be leaking and since it cannot be seen and inspected as it is engulfed with earth, you assume ur Sump is RCC one and water tight. You need to ask these questions.
whether RCC Sump is a mono cast. What is the thickness of RCC Sump,
whether the Sump is plastered on both sides with adequate water proofing compound.
what grade concrete and rebar dia , as per the engineer design or not?
what is the foundation thickness for the Sump.

here is the reference for a Solid fully cast RCC \ un compromised Sump below.
Imagine your sump as Cubical Structure cast in RCC with 6 inch wall thickness all round , with two layer rebar(10\12mm) in a 6 inch grid, cast with M30 or M40 high strength concrete, Sitting on a PCC foundation of 1 ft thickness.
Concrete : 7 M3,Steel : 1 tonne,Shuttering roughly 500 Sq ft, Earth work\removal approx 500cft, Barbending, Plastering Inside\Outside(500Sqft), Mason labour etc. The above construction is a fully cast solid RCC Sump, that last long and you can finish the 15 K Liter Sump in 2 Lakhs and 10 K Liter Sump in 1.5 Lakhs. The pseudo designs with one side plastering and one side brick wall can be accomplished at 60 % of the fully cast RCC Sump.
In a fully cast RCC sump , you can inspect all round for leaks and patch up if required.
