dream_home, gotcha.

parkom, if you what say is what praveen implied then instead of saying dedicated lines to shower, sink taps, kitchen etc., he could have said 'have dedicated untreated water line to flushes' because total number of treated water points will be more than untreated points. Rightaa ?

but i will not prefer to use untreated water to flush lines because over a period of time it will mung the concealed parts. once that happens the whole family will go thru pain in the ... literally.

Hi guys,
What i meant is that you need to segregate the lines in 2 segments treated and not treated.
For flush you don't need softened water ( Vimal maintenance cost of softer will be 4 to 5 time the cost of maintaining ceramic ware with in 2 -3 years)
My opinion of treated line required at
shower,wash basin,washing machine,kitchen
Non treated line
Toilet flush,garden,utility,terrace,service areas
Vimal treated points will be more than untreated but the consumption will be high from untreated lines than treated so we try to avoid loading to much on softeners.

I am also researching this topic. May I suggest you check out PopUp filter developed by KSCST (http://kscst.org.in/rwh.html) or Rainy filter http://www.rainyfilters.com/rainy-filters.html - these are designed for Rain Water harvesting but I have been wondering whether we can use them for filtering the dirty water (also known as drinking water) supplied by our able municipalities

It seems these are lower in cost and very low maintenance (cost wise)

Cauvery pipeline is laid to all homes in my locality (new or old or under construction) and so it becomes a new parameter in water treatment and distribution. A few questions:

1) How are people handling cauvery and borewell/tanker water in localities where cauvery water is already available today ?

2) Do they mix cauvery and borewell or keep sump and OHT pair separately ?

3) Do they treat cauvery water or bypass softener ?

4) How is the water line designed when both cauvery and borewell are available ?

When i designed my home, unknowingly i built two sump tanks. with the advent of cauvery in near future, i can decide to keep one sump for cauvery and another one for borewell. there will be three scenarios when cauvery water is available :

a) only cauvery water (assuming there is enough supply of cauvery water. i will fill both sumps with cauvery water )
b) some cauvery and some borewell (one sump for cauvery and one for borewell)
c) only borewell water (fill both sumps with borewell)

what is the best way to go about water distribution to handle above three cases ? i am sure many members in the forum will be facing such issues in near future.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

I am using pentair softner since about a year. It softens water ok. However, the regeneration process is a challenge. The regeneration is a 2 step process. Step 1 is We need to wash the softner with salt water and then step 2 is clean it with water. The softner starts sucking saltwater and then stops midway,I have to alternate between step 2 and step 1 only then it will suck up all the salt water needed for regeneration. I have to do this once in 2 weeks.

I have kent RO water purifier as well . Kent RO works very well and is almost maintenance free. I have been using it since 2 years now.

I am using the pop-up filter to filter rain water. micro particles pass thru the filter and it will be useless for dissolved impurities and very fine particles.

Hi Aries
Rainy filters are meant for separation of large dust particles, solid waste collected on terraces etc...its not a fine filter and cannot be used as regular water filters.
Also the inlet and out lets are 4-6" wide connections used for rain water pipes not for regular 1/2",3/4",1" pipes used for regular water connections.
As tvsh said you need to maintain the softener very regularly.

Hi,

Agree with tvsh. But what Praveen mentioned in his earlier post regarding changing the resin every 6 months may not be accurate. You need to change the resin once in 10 yrs or less or more as per the product you have chosen. I am using for more than a year now and the only maintenance is the recharging with salt the softner every 15-20 days depending on the hardness and usage of the water in your individual homes.

Also it is better if you have the entire house covered instead of being selective since the cost of being selective will be high and in the long run it is better for the fittings and the plumbing items that you have fitted.

I agree, I was told the resin change happens only in 5-10 years. The recharging with salt also, I think was 2-3 months and not 15-20 days. But I guess it does depend on the hardness and how much water is used.

The recharging (regeneration) is not a function of days. It depends on the daily usage and the capacity of the softner. I need to do regeneration once every 10000 liters, which is around 15 days.

Hi in my previous post changing salts is more frequent than resins.
Like tvsh said changing salts is not a time based but hardness & usage based.on average a one person needs 130-150 ltr per day.so a 4 occupancy needs 500/-ltr per day (in practical we use much more),so you need to add salts every 20 days considering hardness is average.
In areas like Sarjapur it's peak hardness ,my client changes the salts every one week.
So my suggestion is get an actual acessment from expert and take a decision to use softener for entire house or not.
