It may also be better if you have the portico cantilevered which would make it column free and hence easier to maneuver your car in and out.
All the art of living lies in a fine mingling of letting go and holding on....

Hi,
The standard car parking area is not meant for single. When you plan for two or more cars the space in between can be used efficiently by both the car doors ,there by in 8' you can open doors .
You should have minimum 9' width with possibility to open one side door is good enough to park any size of the car.Max car width will be 6' after that its the length that matters. 2'6" to 3' gap on side is good enough to open a door by 75 to 80% for any average sized person to come out of car.
I think planning for any high end top suv models (hummer etc..) we shouldn't discuss about space constrains. If you are fascinated about cars you should sacrifice your living space to park the cars.

I have left a 15'x15' space for car park. As far as I know, most of the cars are around 5'5" in width. So 2 cars next to each other would be approx 11'. 4' would be for opening doors. I know this will not be sufficient. The trick is to park the cars in opposite directions and hence driver side doors would be facing each other diagonally.

I m more worried about length though. 15' is just enough for C segment sedans. Anyways, I m happy with this setup and did not want to compromise on living area of the house

PS: As of now, having only 1 car. The remaining space can be utilised for 2 wheeler parking

Oh, btw, is 8' height sufficient?? The roof of our car park is 8' high

I have seen houses leaving 9 feet of space on one side so that parking plus lighting can be taken care with 2 feet on all other sides .Though the space is less in the ground floor advantages are 1. House will get sufficient lighting 2. if we construct first /second floor and given for rent then all can park with disadvantage that it will be serial parking 3. Can be used for little gardening if required as first/second floor given for rent then we cannot can roof gardening?
4.This is as per vastu as i heard when we make 15*15 on side then one corner of the house is cut which is bad for eg: If we make 15*15 in NE corner then it is not considered as auspicious as it is considered as no NE corner .I know we cannot follow vastu in practical ,but whoever can follow can put this in mind.

disadvantage is we will have less living space ,but this can be compensated by having duplex construction 1 or 2 bedrooms in the first floor or we can give the ground floor for rent ,and stay in top constructing the full house in the first floor/second floor . It depends on whether you want to give for rent or have duplex house.

8 to 9 feet is would be enough with Volvo opening on one side ,as we can maximum leave only that .
