Ethernet or LAN wiring for house

Post by dev13 »

I am having bit of a confusion on how to go about finalizing the data network for my house under construction.

I want provision for multiple Wifi Access points (as it is G+3 construction), multiple LAN ports (for study area, TV locations and IP camera locations).

Are there some good security/networking consultants,
you can refer so I can convey my specific requirements and he/she provides the full diagram (just like electical diagram)?

Wi-fi works better within the same floor or Maximum 1+1 floor. As the no of concrete walls increases, obstructions disturbs the connectivity. Hence bandwidth reduces leading to performance deterioration. You can have a Main Wi-fi Rouer at any one floor and use the repeaters/extenders at each floors for improved performance. Also there will be impact on performance of your wi-fi network with the use of Microwave ovens, Cordless/Dect Phones within the range. (If there is any Defence establishments nearby your area, impact will be more).

Main threat is, any tech geeks who stays nearby your house can crack the encryption of your wi-fi network and utilise your whole network including the broadband Internet connection free of cost(If your secury encryption is of low to medium level).

Alternately better to go for Wired LAN Network on all the floors and you can use any device at any point at any time.

I would like to voice a contrary opinion.

Wireless is the way to go. You can easily secure your network since modern wireless routers support good encryption. A good router will be able to get you a strong signal in all floors. You can also buy cheap "extenders" if the signal doesn't penetrate through the walls.

In my opinion Each Room you can connect to your internal Lan and the at common place have a good switch. So you can use home network for all kind of data transmission spl. HD media . I have provisioned similar in my apt. have tried with good Wifi always beams n pillar have challenges.

At specific points you can put router.

You can buy Cat 6 Cable from SP Road, abt 3K for good brancd for 1 spool.
Connect all rooms at common place (near tv center or data center) where you can place your router / Switch.

Hi,

I have done this for my own house at Bangalore at the time it was constructed 6 years back. I am a Telecom engineer and technology enthusiast. I may be able to help you with the diagrams and selection of equipment for the Ethernet and Telephone network. If interested, then please feel free to send me a PM.

Regards,
