Need inputs on selection of wood

Post by Iyyappan »

Hi all,

I am planning to buy burma teak cut pices, not going for log.
In bannerghatta road, all timber shops quoted around 2800 per c.ft.

Is it reasonable price?
What are the things to take care while purchasing burma teak?

And Could you please let me know the current carpenter rate for windows & doors?

Thanks in advance.

I purchased very good burma teak for rs. 2500 / c. ft in ganganagar area (but that was about a year ago).
Carpenter costs - I don't have a break out (since I did a lot of different things and there were 2 different carpenters in my case).

what to look for when buying wood, I think there are good guidelines on Gharexpert.com

Thanks Mahesh...lots of information.

Have you done with your purchase? I am still researching & you can count me for joint shopping.

Want to select a wood for frames and shutters (windows and doors) which gives natural look with some polishing and would like to avoid paint. Got information that only teak wood can be polished. But my budget doesn't permit for teak wood.

Can anybody suggest for an alternate wood.

Dear All,
Elongation of the bar is more important. Well established manufacture will have this property not compromised . Even test result may be passed nearer to the IS requirement. How about consitancy of lot play vital role. Yield stress of the bar is also important in the quality. It is unfare to comment on materails without full knowledge of it. So check 100% before buying and get evaluted with Qualfied structral engineer to review. Not by a civil engineer

Hi,
Only teak wood (available in india) is a good looking wood other woods doesn't have good grains .Don't polish other woods unless you use good polisher .
Teak wood cost would range from 2800 - 3000/- per cft depending up on the wood section size .Thicker the section more the cost .

friends.....if teak is out of the budget.....next reliable one is the "honne". you could use this for the frames & the shutters. do not go for sal & neem.

Hi SunP,

I purchased it last Monday, about 30CFT of Sal @ 1000 and 5CFT of Teak @3200. All for Door Frame (5x3 and one 6x4)
Both woods are of good quality. The Sal timer/log was pretty big, I think it was easily 300 year old.
I purchased it from Metro Timbers on Kanakapura road,

additional cost,
Plying - 60/CFT
s design cut - 2/RFT
thattu cut - 2/RFT

I had my carpenter do the selection for me. Let me know if you need any other info
