Cut Lintel Vs Full Lintel
Hi,
Generally during construction ,I have seen pillars being raised to 7 ft, then a lintel runs through them full, then another 2.5ft of the pillar and then main roof on it. In my case, the contractor is telling that the pillar will go all the way upto 9.5ft in one shot followed by the roof. Later the lintels will be done as and when the brick walls are done up to 7ft and that too only where its required , like above windows.
My question is, in this case , where does the chejjas ( sun shade slabs above windows ) hold to ? Wont it be just to the brick wall? Will it be strong enough ?

Hi,
Running a through lintel is expensive and not required. Lintels are required ony where there is opening like window , door , niches.
chejjas are required for external doors and windows, wherever required they will extend the 100mm thick lintel to 450mm wide(outside).It will be strong enough.

HI ,A running lintel has a structural purpose in case of slender columns like 6" to avoid twist .Now that any residence min column size is 8" or 9" there is not structural value for continuous lintel .

I thought my pillars are 6" in size . Because I dont see pillars projecting anywhere out of the brick wall which is 6" apco block. Should the pillar be atleast 8" or 9" ?

most pillars seem to come in the outside walls, I hope your outside walls are more than 6" thick!

Hi,
Minimum size of column is 6" used for block works .In general external walls are recommended to use 8" solid block to avoid seepage , moisture,fungus etc....
In your case if 6" columns are used i would recommend to use continuous lintel .

According to Building Materials and Technology promotion council, Full Lintels are essential for withstanding earthquakes.
The lintel band ties the walls together and creates
a support for walls loaded along weak direction from
walls loaded in strong direction. This band also

The explanation in the attachment is for load bearing structure only.In a framed structures (columns ) since the entire building is tied up with plinth beam and roof beam it holds good for earth quake .There will be no major contribution from lintels unless columns are very slender .
