there are 3 types of slab measurements:

1. Gangsaw - These are big slabs over 8 feet in width. The lengths are again at a minimum of 8 feet. This is expensive as the machines required to process them are expensive.

2. Cutter slabs - Small width slabs between 20 inches to 48 inches in width. These are economical in range.

3. Tile slabs - these are 1x1/ 2x2/ 2x3 in dimensions (feet). These are derived from rejected cutter/ gangsaw slabs.

With Gang saw slabs, the major advantage is the less number of joints. One thing to bear in mind with Gang Saw is that, these large size slabs are only suitable for ground floor, where you have a large opening to bring these huge slabs and lay them. For higher floors, these slabs cannot be transported on narrow stairs and hence will be cut into smaller sizes, so there is no point in spending lot of money on Gangsaw slabs for higher floors.

Yesterday bought 415 FE ISI TMT steel for 43500/ton excluding transportation charge for lintel, chajja. The prices are down by almost 8% as the same steel was at 46500/ton last month.

With Gang saw slabs, the major advantage is the less number of joints. One thing to bear in mind with Gang Saw is that, these large size slabs are only suitable for ground floor, where you have a large opening to bring these huge slabs and lay them. For higher floors, these slabs cannot be transported on narrow stairs and hence will be cut into smaller sizes, so there is no point in spending lot of money on Gangsaw slabs for higher floors.

the gangsaw will still be cut at 5x5 or 4x5, which could still be carried all the way upto the top. Dealing with cutter granites is a third graded job & gangsaw deals are neat & clean, as long as the budgets support you. This is my personal opinion.

Any idea on how much do the "pavers" cost??? & its laying charges??? references appreciated.

Today i bought in below rates.
1. Minakshi TMT 500 Grade Steel - 44000/ton + Transport extra
2. Ultratech cement - 330/each for 70 bags
3. Medium size River sand for moulding - 25K (420 sft)

My engineer dissuaded us from using cutter slabs and recommended us to buy gangsaw slabs. His point was that cutter slabs were hand polished and gangsaw slabs were polished by machines. His opinion was that the gangsaw slabs have superior polish and the granite looks good for longer.

The price difference we saw was around Rs. 75 - 80 between cutter slabs and gangsaw. We eventually bit the bullet and bought gangsaw slabs.

The engineer is wrong....it is just not possible to handpolish a slab of 3x10 by any standards. as i mentioned, the machines used for gangsaw is expensive & hence higher the cost. as far as the finishing is concerned, both cutters & gangsaw will be of the same standards, if done properly.
