Is Kadapa/Granite slab strong enough ?

Hello,

My contractor suggests Kadapa or Granite Slab ( 30mm thickness) for my utility area. I am not fully convinced as I have doubts on its strength . I suggested having a concrete slab and then have granite/kadapa on it. Is a 30mm granite slab good enough ? My slab dimension is 8 X 1.5 ft .

Also how is the granite sink ? Does it develop cracks over a period of time. I saw two types. One is granite pieces joined with some kind of a resin , which I dint like. The other one is full sink made on one piece of stone. Thats costly - 1800 per sqft ( For a 2 X 2 sink it costs 7200 ).

If any of you have any experience please let me know.

my mother has had a granite sink for 30 years, and that sink is still in good shape. I don't think they will crack.

Kadappa stone for shelves is ok (but like you say, I have been told that they are not very strong - and besides the thickness they come in are probably the reason for this low strength). In utility area, there won't be much weight - you will probably put some dishes and stuff (on the counter), so if your contractor has evaluated based on the length required that it is ok, perhaps it may be.

Why don't you try stainless steel sink. I have been using this for the past 7 years without any problem. It is very easy to clean also. For aprox 1' 9" X 1' 5" stainless sink I paid about Rs.2000-, 7 years ago. It may be slightly more now.

Stainless steel sinks are good - only make sure they have damping built in. otherwise, every time water falls on it (or even dishes), you get a lot of noise. In my opinion, I prefer the granite sinks, but my husband did not want granite sink for kitchen, so I picked stainless steel and am still regretting it. Although he does say it looks good.

try carysil. looks are better than steel and granite. i have used it at my home, it is little bit costly though.

reverse the sink and you will see some kind of coating on the reverse side. It would look like papier mache cover over the steel portion. Basically - you should not see a steel surface on the other side.

Had a bad experience with Carysil Sink. One of the sinks had a big crack in it when we received it, but neither the dealer (JP Ceramics) nor the company (Carysil) is taking responsibility for it. Architect is convinced that it is a manufacturing defect. Company person inspected the sink, but they have been dragging their feet on a resolution for several weeks. Overall a negative experience with Carysil and I would not recommend it for this forum.
