Kitchen slab

Post by Yogi »

I will be having a modular kitchen. The traditional way is to lay the granite counter slab on the brick pillars supporting it. If I do this, will there be a problem while designing the modular kitchen later on? I read somewhere that the modular accessories come in standard sizes and laying the granite counter slab now (with the brick pillar supporting it) would pose a problem in finding the accessories.

My mestri is telling that he needs to build the brick pillar to support the granite slab before flooring starts.. Please let me know how can i go about it.

Hi Yogi,

If you are going to buy ready made modular kitchen then you need to visit the shops to find out the measurements. If you are going to ask your carpenter to make a modular kitchen then he can do as per the available measurements. In this case you can ask to build brick pillars to support the counter top.

There is another alternative to brick pillars if you are going for 20mm counter top. Your carpenter can make a wooden support for counter top. Pls check with him.

another option (which is what I went with). Get your cabinets done first, and then once the base is laid, lay your counter top on that. That is the standard practice in the US etc. and so I insisted it be done that way for me. This way, you don't lose valuable storage space for supports (whether it is wood or brick ).

Hi,

If one is going for Modular Kitchen / Made by carpenter as per your design etc.. one doesn't need the brick pillars, Finish all the flooring works except the skirting behind the Kitchen cabinets (will be of no use as well as it will act as hindrance while fixing the skin ply or board), dadoing (2' tiles above kitchen counter should also be done later - follow these steps
- Finish the flooring of kitchen
- Get the wood work of kitchen done (both bottom and above counter)
- If going for modular be specific the executing agency take the measurement of the kitchen your requirements, electrical and plumbing points ....
- once the wood work is done and the accessories of cabinets (baskets, ..) take the measurements of the granite counter, get it purchased (20mm thick) ask your granite mistry to fix it by placing over the cabinet,
- After that if u are going for 4" granite skirting over the counter its good or get the tiles pasted on the walls above the counter without leaving the gap (water should not penetrate from the wall tile and granite counter junction)
- Also check the chimney opening and sink positing before going for wood work, better go for drawing - its very complicated (be careful)

Hi,
To make it simple:

Have 4inch wall built and lay kitchen slab, if you are not going for cabinet beneath it. ( Suggestion:Dont build supporting wall till you get slabs. Depending on lenght you can decide where you get supporting wall built)

for modular kitchen, have cabinet done then lay the slab.

Hi all

What are the choices in granite for kitchen slabs other than black and Hassan green. My engineer and supplier say that other granites are porous. I like some colored slabs. Can somebody suggest some non porous stones and their approx price.
