Hello,
I am planning to get woodwork done by a contractor for my house.
He has quoted 700/sq ft for wardrobes and loft with commercial ply and SS fittings (handles, locks), including dressing table. Any comments on this price?
875/Sq ft for kitchen and loft with waterproof ply, SS fittings (trays, handles). Any comments on this price?
But 2/3 of the kitchen work is occupied by loft, for which he will only fix a frame and doors. But he is still charging 875/sq ft for the entire kitchen. Is this OK?
Can somebody share there experience with wood work and the cost?
Warm regards,
Nirdesh.

Re: Wood Work
Hi ,Nirdesh
700/- per sft for wardrobe and loft average of wardrobe will be 850/- and loft at 500- 600/- per sft .Which is ok cost.
But then it mostly depends on what kind of ply he is using. No brand mentioned .Since you get ply starting from 40/- per sft to 160/- per sft.handles also start from 20 /- per piece to 1200/- and more per piece.
So collect more details to make sure that there are no surprises later.

Re: Wood Work
The cost depends on the kind of wardrobes.
You can have a boxed wardrobes or frame construction. Boxed construction needs plywood on all the 4 sides where as frame construction is much cheaper. Even with boxed construction, using 19mm plywood sheets on all 4 sides would make the wardrobes sturdy. you can get it done cheaper by going for thinner plywood sheets on the sides as the walls would support the box. So make sure you understand what is being quoted, so you can make sure you are getting what you were quoted.
I got the complete wood work done for my house, I bought all the materials and gave a labor contract @ Rs 150 per sft for boxed construction for both kitchen and wardrobes.

Re: Wood Work
I agree with tvsh. Laminates of greenply of 1mm is 1000 rs agree but if he gives you Mica or some other merino product it would be 750-800 rs. Likewise dont compromise on wood. I am sure AGP(I dont know about it ) could be good but based on my research Greenply/Kitply are standard brands.
Re: Wood Work
I don't think going for high brand image plywood and wasting money is not suggestable. If it is box type, it is better to settle for middle range plywood(60-70) as the plywood sheets will become enough sturdy when laminated. Laminates too... cedar and signature are equally good though they cost a bit less. I paid 150 for box and 100 for frame for work contract. Visit half a dozen plywood shops, you will learn a lot.
