I am Looking for suggestion here, Why is it required to have a back panel(plywood) attached to the wall when building a wardrobe or kitchen cabinet ? Can it be avoided ?
My current house which is 30 years old does not have any back panel (plywood) attached to the wall or kitchen cabinets , therefore we have never came across issues like moisture accumulating or dirt , bugs accumulating in those 1 inch gap between the wall and the panel, because there is no panel.

back in those days, the labour was paid and materials were provided by owner
the workers used to do things which was easier for them..
with the full contract , owners are paying per sq ft of work done and demand that back panel also to be covered.
also, from stability perspective ; back panel would provide better support and its easier to fix hinges.
wall to plywood hinges are good if the walls have good plastering strength..

Only for cost cutting, manual carpenters avoids use of Ply's on the back panel compromising the safety, durability and the strength.
Instead they just use a thin card board & later coat it with the Primer.
Using both side laminated Plywood for the back panel provides
1. Complete Strength & support to the Wardrobe/Modular Kitchen cabinets and avoids deformation/offset of the Caracas over a period of time. In turn you can use lesser thick Ply board. In place of 18/21 mm Ply board, you can use a 16 mm Ply board, which optimizes your input cost.
2. Provides uniform Look & Feel.
3. Avoids moisture entry to the Plywood/or through any water seepage, if the wardrobe is located adjacent to the Bathrooms or any water leakage from the ceilings due to RCC issues.
4. Its easy to damage the Card Board & take entry to the wardrobe by termites, worms or cockroaches.
