I did not get an official quote, but my carpenter said it would cost approximately rs. 1.5 lakhs per closet (I have fairly large ones - about 10' in one room, 8' in 2 rooms and so on). I dropped that idea and am pursuing doing it with wire shelves - let us see how that will work out. So far, the estimate I got was rs. 1.02 lakhs for 5 wardrobes, + one shelf for utility room.

ok, wire shelves are metal rods coated with plastic. THe shelves will be made of several such rods put together (vs. a completely solid plank for a shelf with wood).

Advantages (from my perspective)
1. cost (much cheaper than wood).
2. reduction in pests (since the whole thing is more airy, not much room for roaches to lay eggs etc.)
3. Easy to clean (since it is plastic, just wipe clean).

But some negatives -
You can have all shelves and hanger rods with this (basically entire interior of your closet) and just have doors made. (in my case, I have all walk in closets, so I have a door to the room and no need of any wood work at all).

Hi Santro,
In the current market rates any kind of wardrobe made with ply/block board with laminate inside and outside in good quality will not be less than 900- 950 /- per sft.Given that raw material prices have gone high in the recent time there is a big revision in interiors pricing.

^^ I agree. I had finally gone with the 950/- psft quote. If someone is giving at a lesser price, then look for the quality gaps.

I would be a little hesitant to get steel wardrobes, they could get to be very noisy!

It used to be noisy with older models. I find new ones are better designed and aesthetically appealing. Last week, I visited Triveni showroom in koramangala and saw their steel wardrobes. They look good, colorful, solid and have pretty much all what you can get with plywood wardrobes (shelves, vertical space, locker, drawers at lower level, mirror, light provision, etc.) that are desinged by the interior guys. It is also not costly. In my opinion, going for plywood based product does not make sense for the price people pay.
