UPVC Kitchen cabinets

Hi,

I find UPVC is replacing wood for doors and windows but have not seen UPVC material used to make kitchen cabinets. In my current rental villa (i am the first tenant), the woodwork in the kitchen is not done well. As a result I find mushroom grows around kitchen sink and is an eyesore. I guess if the wood is eliminated from the kitchen then we can avoid termites, mushrooms, pest growth etc., I saw a company listed in yellowpages claiming to manufacture upvc kitchen cabinets. Can people in the know throw suggestions & pros and cons of going for upvc kitchen cabinets ?

Thanks
Vi.

I have finalized on my kitchen design. Now for buying the right materials, I have seen there are Marine Ply MDF shutters and also UV Polymer shutters which are scratch resistant. If anyone is interested to have a modular kitchen setup for their house, maybe you can leave your details in this post, and we can try to make a group purchase which will help us reduce the rates. I am planning to start buying equipment towards end of September, so there is sometime before we can look around and get some good offers. I already know a few shops of wholesale distributors for hettich and hafele. Though I havent spoken to them on the rates, I am sure with bulk purchase, we can get the best discounts. If anyone is game, feel free to post your comments below.

mushrooms growing in your kitchen? that is very odd. You might have meant moss kind of stuff. Anyways, it could also be that your kitchen is not getting sufficient light and air. That is to answer what you refer to as mushroom growth.

As for pests etc. , in tropical countries, there will be pests and best way to prevent or control it, is via pest control. Even if you use PVC or another material, inside the cabinets, it is dark and roaches like to get in the dark area during the day and come out at night. It does not matter what material.

You can reduce the termite problem by eliminating wood.

Hi JollyRogers,
I am also in a similar spot, but our kitchen design is not finalised.
We are trying to strike a balance between modular and traditional
type of kitchen. Not sure how this will turn out.
It will be a good idea if we can pool in our efforts.

@jollyrogers - my construction is in the plastering stage and have started exploring the modular kitchen setup. Please include me in the list for the bulk purchase. Do you know the labours who can be utilized to setup modular kitchen with the materials purchased from the wholesale distrubutors.

Sure, I will keep you posted once I have more details around the prices. Any good carpenter who has an experience in setting up kitchens can fix the modular kitchen components.

I am getting my modular kitchen through well qualified team and I can provide the contact info through PM or post here if everyone wants it.
They are well qualified and have acquired latest trends in this area. They give various options based on our budget and design; and I have gone for Ply with lamination on both the sides with 19mm thickness.

Hi All

How much it cost? How beneficial as compared to putting a granite slab which cost 80Rs /Sq ft ? . I was earlier planning for concrete 1.5 ft slabs in the kitches with plywood doors(water resistant) but latter found cost is more than granite slab as centering(20 rs Sq:ft)+barbending+finishing etc as for granite not need of finishing+material etc required. At what stage we should start this ,as i feel it should be before the plastering . Am i right?

Regards
Sam
