I have purchased a new flat and it is nearing completion. My mother is more comfortable with simple slab work in kitchens rather than modular kitchens because of various reasons. For example, the wood might get affected if you place damp utensils, which means the vessels have to be cleaned dry and then placed in the kitchens. Also, cockroaches get into modules easily. Therefore, even in rented houses which had modules, we never used those modular kitchens.

While I was searching for options for my new flat, I found that modular kitchens are made in aluminium also from a website of a company based in bangalore. The website mentioned that the aluminium based modular kitchens can be cleaned easily using water or damp cloth. Also, they are termite and insect resistant and maintenance free. I called the company which made these but they told me they are no longer doing it. Does anyone have experience of using such modular kitchens? How is the cost calculated ? And, is there any company that makes it in bangalore. I need to know these because I am not sure whether I can afford it in case it is costly.

You can try for PVC modular kitchens.They look good.It costs 300rs per sft compared to 1200rs sft for italian kitchens.

I would not recommend use of PVC in a kitchen because of its being fire prone, and more importantly the highly toxic fumes it gives off when burning.

Recently, I read in Hindu newspaper that if you line the kitchen modules with granite slab then the insects will not colonize because the slab surface will be cold and insects do not like it.

Regarding the original query of water from the just-washed utensils affecting the wood, this is a given since in the West, where the modular kitchens originated from, all, without exception, use only dishwashers which gives you hot and dry utensils. So wet utensils are not a concern that would have gone into designing these cabinets.

This is the reason (indian setting) why I want a cabinet that can withstand damp vessels in the long run. Aluminium should be cheaper than steel kitchens (Godrej) but the difficulty lies in finding the company that does it. However, if Aluminium is also way too costly, then I would go with slabs beneath the granite counter top and try for a steel kitchen cupboard.

Why dont you go for marineply based kitchen design with natural veneer? Also, you can try natural woods like rubber wood..

Did someone able to find out the Aluminium based Modular Kitchens. I was going thru the sterling-wp.com and it looks impressive. Will try to call them and find out the dealers in Bangalore.

Were you able find the dealers for steel pole kitchen cabinets in Bangalore? I also liked this idea of using steel pole for kitchen cabinet as should will be stronger compared to plywood. But wanted to know feedback from someone who has really used this for their modular kitchen as I am worried about the final outcome (fit and finish) and if it will be same as modular kitchen.
