Hi,

In my ongoing home construction, I see spans of around 22ft. But the structual drawing is suggesting only 18inch beam depth - 6inch inside slab, 12inch outside of slab. I'm trying to understand is this enough? Any references in this aspect will be helpful...

Beam thickness and width b x h depends on reinforcements used among other things.
As long as it is properly designed by an structural engineer you shouldn't worry.
I have a bedroom above parking area in partial basement and span is 19 feet and one inverted beam of 18 inches is used on one side
To give headroom at parking ramp.
This inverted beam doubles up as boundary for balcony. In front of BR
So yes it is double.
