Hi Guys,

I am starting to construct on 20*34 Plot. with 1st & 2nd floor being duplex. To save space, i was thinking of using spiral staircase - as it can be done in radius of 3 feet. More than that - it does not eat lot of space upfront into Hall.

My Contractor(Not finalized, but one who is in my mind) suggested this. I saw one of his construction with SemiSpiral, and it looked really great.

But when contacted with Architect he said - Absolutely No to this.And said it requires good 8 feet.

So, now i am in delimma?

Contractor is confident abt it, but not architect.
I want to utilise space as much for living?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Radius of 3 feet i,e. spiral stair dia of 6 feet conforms to most residential building code standards in US. Wonder why your architect is against it.

space wise it is efficient. but be careful - it is more inconvenient going up and down those stairs, particularly with any baggage. Also, if you have older people, then it will be very difficult for them (very strenuous I mean).

Hi,
You need min 3' radius for any spiral stair for easy movement .Your architect would have told 8' DIA .3' radius is sufficient for one way traffic and you cannot shift any furniture.You need to provide a TRAP door of 3'x4' min in the slab to move the furniture .
