Dear members,

I heard there is interlocking roofing tiles available for better thermal insulation for top most floor. Once the tiles are fixed, nominal steel reinforcement is laid and concrete is poured to form a 3 inch slab against a usual 6 inch slab typically used for house construction.

Any of you have used this type of roofing for top floor, please let me know your experience and if there is any pitfalls.

For Basement floor we used clay pots. For the next two roofs we have used maruthi blocks similar to what is explained in the links

In theory it is supposed to save money due to concrete saving. But it requires pretty skilled labourers to do cementing on top of centering sheets. Also there is cost incurred in the cementing step.

One thing that this definitely saves is plastering cost of the roof. The other aspect is - if you care for the environment, this approach uses less cement, steel and hence less damage to nature.

Thank you very much Girish for the valuable information. Is there any possibilities of water seepage or leaks due to reduced thickness of concrete slab? Also what is the cost of Maruthi blocks and from where did you purchase it? If you can pass on some contact, it will be useful.

Actually waterproofing needs to be done on top roof - just like any other solid roof. There should no structural issues due to reduced thickness of concrete if designed correctly.

I have to warn you that this kind of work is not for the regular contractors/labourers. Definitely requires skilled labourers including centering person who needs to account for the extra weight of 2-3" of mud+cement that is used for levelling.

filler roofs are not cheaper in the current market trend.They are environmental friendly concepts .
A general cost analysis shows 30% labour cost and 70% material cost in regular concrete slab
In filler slabs shows 50% labour cost and 50% material cost .
The look an feel you can achieve in filler slab is amazing and earthy feel.
