Steel Windows pros and cons

Post by krikks »

Hi Folks,

I have searched through the forums and find it interesting that there hasn't been a lot of discussion on the pros and cons of Steel Windows. (frame+grill+shutter all made of steel). I must admit that this could be because, these days the UPVC variety is what is preferred for the obvious benefits it provides: termite free, air tight seal etc.
However, steel windows were quite popular I remember in the 90s especially with folks who wanted windows that were quite tall (the floor to lintel variety). A uncle of mine used it in his house that was built in the late 80s and is quite happy with them to this day. The only complaint he has is the regular maintenance they need - greasing the hinges, painting etc. On closer inspection of the windows in his house, I noticed most of them close with quite a bit of air gap between the frame and the shutter (about quarter of an inch or so). I don't know if this is just bad workmanship as far as window fabrication goes or if the windows have deformed due to some heat expansion and contraction. (I highly doubt that just plain sun exposure could cause this much of expansion-contraction deformation)
I would appreciate if members who may have explored steel windows as an option can share their gyan on why they have fallen out of fashion and if there are some serious shortcomings I need to consider.

Thanks,
Krithi
