Information required regarding borewell drilling

Post by sunilmpatil »

Hi Friends,

I recently got borewell drilled in my site, but could not find water source even after going beyond 1100 ft, hence stopped the drilling.

Before drilling borewell, I got the site verified by two people, a geologist (who brought a copper wire and compass) and another water diviner (who brought a coconut and dry stick).

Both showed different points, within a distance of 2 feet. I finally went with geologist, thinking that he might be more scientifically correct and also both points were close enough. (many people suggested to go with geologist too).

But could not trace water even after crossing 1050 ft, though the estimated depth was 650-700 ft.

Now I need suggestion of below points:

1. The borewell vendor told that there is little water (1 inch) and the same will percolate and collect after some time. Due to dust and heat generated by the driller, it is currently evaporated.
So he suggested to wait for some days and then re-check. Is this a fact or just a hoax ? Because I wish to spend on motor now only if there is water.

2. When I contacted the geologist about the situation, he suggested camera scan-blast method. Where in, water source is checked by doing a camera scan and water can be collected by doing a blast!
Dont know what exactly he meant. I personally dont want to go ahead with this, as I dont want to take risk anymore on spending money based on probabilities. Anyone have experience regarding this ?

3. Though this is not relevant question now, whether the method followed by water diviners scientific ? By just a copper wire or a coconut, is it possible to trace water which is below 1000 ft ?
Anyone knows more about this ?

If nothing works, I am planning to convert it to rain water harvest point. :)

Hi,
Since you have drilled so much of depth, you will get the water after some rain dont worry,
Last year I also had a same problem, i did not get any source till 800ft, finally stopped drilling,

Then after few days to rechage the bore well with rain water, I consructed a 4X5X12 ft deep pit around bore well pipe, and filled with layers of small boulders, layer of small 20 mm jelly, one layer charcoal, one layer jelly, again netlon cover spread on jelly and filled the above layer with sand, then pit is connected to rain water pipes from teras,
After 2 -3 rains, water stared percolating naturally to earth and now I am getting water regularly,

we need to know one thing as we spend laks to dig the bore well, but we will hesitate to recharge the mother earh with rain water, by spending another 10 to 15 thousand,

The above method succeded in my locality wherever they have implimented this.
For more information for rain water recharge you can call me 9035443215, i will help you how to plan for this or drop mail or you can visit M vishveshwaraih water park in jayanagar for further details.

already you have reached maximum drilling limit.
Even if you get any water at this level(below 900 yo 1000 ft depth), it is not advised for human consumption, due to high level of mineral and chemical contents.
The only option left out for you is to implement Rain water harvesting quickly to recharge the Water bed. As the monsoon is going to start shortly, better start working
on it immediately. Google for more information on Bore well water recharge methods.

Here are few links for one such information.

I have heard about the camera scan method and it costs around 2-4k rupees but I am not very sure about it. Maybe someone else can help.
One question about recharge : Although recharge is a must and will definitely help in the long run will it really be a short term solution? Since there would be rock after a certain depth will it not take many years for water to percolate through that to the levels at 800-1000 ft? I agree it is everyone's responsibility to do this and helpful in the long run but just want to know how people say they start getting water after recharging for a single rainy season.

Last week I visited a place 15 kms after Tiptur, where almost every house had a open well(Baavi) & they used to get good water within 100ft depth for the entire year. Later plenty of greedy farmer drilled a bore well unlimitedly in the last decade and cultivated commercial crops like betelnut, Arecanut and Coconut Trees..etc. Today none of their Open Wells/Bore wells in their village has water in that village even in Rainy season. Many of them already closed their wells as there is no water, instead of doing Rain water recharging & the whole village is now depending on a Lake from where water will be supplied once in a week (i don't know, how long it will cater to them). So whom should they blame for their today's situation ?? That's why our ancestors were brilliant & systematic in conserving natural resources. In those days, every village, they had a reserved Forest, Gomala, Lakes/Ponds, Temples....etc.

The very basic purpose of going for a bore well in a house is for a long term requirement.

Most of the rain water goes waste & doesn't get percolated into the water bed. Every construction & Roads reducing the area of natural water percolation. Only Lakes, Ponds and RWH process can percolate rain water into the water bed. So we need to take specific measures to in order to divert the rain water to recharge water bed.

When all the lakes/ponds get disappearing, RWH is the only solution left out and its not a one time process. You may get water for few days this year
and after subsequent years of recharge process, you will be happy to reap the benefit forever.

hi,

In my opinion rainwater harvesting is a very important in the current scenario where everywhere there is concerting and no place for the water to get absorbed into the soil.We implemented this in our apartment and reaping the benefits. We should not think if our borewell is getting recharged or not instead have a broader view that the water table will be benefited.

About the camera into the borewell hole, we did this after drilling our borewell for 1200ft and did get water which the drilling guy said around 1.5 inch. we wanted to know the exact depth at which there was water source and since my relative in hometown was doing this service just utilised it out of curiosity. they give us a cd which showed where there were dry water sources and after that when the camera enters into water we could just see some bubbles where we got the water source. they too cannot tell if the water pressure is good/bad but from experience they said it was medium. they do this after 1 week of drilling.

camera method can only tell you if there is any water source or not. donno if they can tell you the yield exactly.

Hi Sunil,

Do not loose hopes on bore well. During drilling and being summer if the yield is less the water will not come out, we will only get wet mud or stone powder. If you have dampness, you are sure to get water, that depends on how many sources you have. Even if the water does not flow out you will have water. The information given by the borewell vendor to check after few days is right. This was my experience as well i did not see water flow when the borewell was dug, after 2 weeks there was storage water and it was reasonably good. This being peak summer the storage might be less, and it will improve after rains.

Check the water level after 1 or 2 weeks. Use a thread to measure how much water you have. Take a stone and tie it to the thread, you will get white twine thread from the fancy /general store. Take a cotton or cloth thread and not the plastic thread around 500 ft or more. Start lowering the thread in the borewell and you will hear a sound when the stone enters water. You can withdraw the thread and measure the length, and then calculate by reducing the length by 1100 ft and that is the storage water for eg: if you hit water at 100 feet, then you have storage of 1000 feet, each feet contains 5 liters of water. send me your contact details to my mail id and i can call you.

good luck

Hi bsc2010/Others,

I am planning to drill a borewell at my site in a weeks time. Is it advisable to dig borewell around this time, surely the water level will be low. so maybe we will have to dig more.

Please let me know shall i wait for the monsson to arrive and then go ahead with the borewell digging , or is summer time is good enough.

Thanks in advance .

Hi Asif,

Borewell should be digged in Summer Season as you know how much water will come. Later in Monsoon any how the Water level will be increased .

Don't know how long will this go in Long term, Digging the Borewell every next home now. Water is not available in some areas inspite of drilling more than 1000 Fts depth.

It's your luck to get the good water level which will long last.

Best of luck!!!

Hi Chida,

Thanks for the quick reply. Even my concerns were the same, with the water level decreasing. in my area others have dug 700 ft min to get water, so now since its summer , i think the level will be lower , which means more digging and more cost. Though i am planning for rain water harvesting just next to the borewell . i was just wondering what if i hold back till the rain season.

There is a point that digging more than 1000 ft has the risk of getting contaminated water with chemicals.

Anyway thanks for your advise. So summer seems to be the best time to dig borewell.

Others views are also welcome.

Asif
