Hello all,

I am planning for G+2 house design with exposed bricks, i love the way these bricks looks and feel close to nature. I need following suggestion
1. is it ok to have exposed bricks for g+2 building? i usually saw them being used for Ground floor builds.
2. I guess it has to be special and high quality bricks to be used for exposing, what is the typical cost of such bricks and where can i see some samples?
3. How is the maintenance?

1. I do not see any reason why you cannot have 2 floors of exposed brick. I have some walls made of exposed brick, and they are one on top of the other.
2. Wirecut bricks cost almost double that of normal bricks. I think I paid Rs. 13 per brick.
3. I got couple of coats of matt finish PU coating done (this is a transparent coating and retains the natural color of the bricks.). The painter said it it will retain the finish for a long time. My house is only 3 months old. So cannot comment on the maintenance aspect.

Important thing is, you need to find the masons who know how to build exposed brick walls. Most masons now a days do a shoddy job of the brick work since the plaster will any way cover it. Exposed walls need to be built carefully. Unfortunately, my masons did not do a great job.

I have built my house with lot of exposed bricks. Most of my elevation is through exposed brick only. I procured them for Rs 14 per brick. The problem is to make sure these are not spoilt during the construction phase. I went with brick color paint to bring their natural color black.

You need to be aware that the construction requires good mason as it is painstakingly time consuming and need good workmanship to build them.

Coming to your questions
1. If you are building the house using RCC, it does not matter if they are used in ground or first floor. if you are constructing using load bearing, please consult your structural engineer to understand the load bearing ability across floors

2. The bricks are surely separated from the normal bricks in terms of quality and color. Good wirecut bricks should cost around Rs 14-Rs 16. Make sure they are even( All bricks should be of even length. You can check this by picking some random bricks and placing them next to each other and on top of each other)

3. These bricks are first constructed by normal brick on brick method and then there will be a process called pointing which gives them the strength. Once this is done, you can chose to either seal them through PU coating or Wetherproof paint depending on your taste.

Hi,
My house is currently under construction. I had/ still have the same confusion. You can choose from two options.
1. Wire cut clay bricks- exposed - Rs 12-14/- 9*4*3inch
2. Porotherm blocks- exposed - Rs 60/- 16*8*8inch Rs 50/- 16*8*6inch
as people pointed out, wire cut clay bricks look very classy, but requires dedicated masonry and strict supervision. Also, it works out more expensive than Normal bricks/ blocks+Plastering+ Painting
Porotherm Blocks works almost the same price as normal bricks+paint.
Btw, my plan is to go to with Wire cut bricks and I am trying to source the same from Malur. If you are interested too, please pm me your number. If both of us go together, we can get a good deal on the bricks. Malur bricks are quite cheaper compared to prices here.
Others, can you please post some pictures of your finished walls. It would be of great help to all other members. thanks
