Hi,
I visited some red brick factories around malur and came across two types of red bricks , one being burnt using coal (5 rs per piece) and another one with wood extracts (4 rs per piece)
Can someone comment about quality difference.
I am looking to buy around 50k bricks. Please contact me for bulk by if someone intersted
Thanks in advance!!!

Just going my thumb rule in construction material that I have, if its costlier, its for a reason and it may be good
But I can be completely wrong in there!
However, I do have a requirement of bricks (dont know the number yet), to build a 10,000 Liter under ground sump. I will get the numbers from my contractor and let you know. Because I got the basic rate of 6 rupee each for the bricks. Is it that 5 Rs/PC from Malur = 6 Rs/ PC to Bangalore, add transportation, loading/unloading etc etc?

Hi Guys,
Have spent few weeks in doing the verification of Red Bricks.
Explored Wirecut Bricks and Red Bricks
Here are the findings
Wirecut Bricks - Made of same clay(Red or black colour soil from lake side or rive side) as used for Red bricks and they do mix some kerosine to get the sticky kind of material as an out put.
They use the machine for mixing including kerosine and passed through moulding machine and when it comes out as a block it will be cut using wired mesh.
Size you get mostly 3*6*9 compared to regular bricks which come typically one small thread less like 2.8*5.8*8.7 like this
Finishing look will be good for wirecut bricks and they are stronger in nature than regular bricks due to machine processing and kerosine mix which makes mud to hold together stronger
Red Bricks - There are 2 types in this. One is called Table Mould and another called Hand mould
Hand mould is 50 Paise costly than Table mould due to manual work of mixing using legs and taking a handful of wet mud as a ball and put inside the wood block and chop the top and take the brick mould out for drying purpose
Table mould is mould box kept on the table and wet mud put on to it and top chopped using some woodden piece nad then remove the table mould box so it forms like a bricks left on table. efffort spent here is less than table mould due to at one stretch you can do 5-10
Now i shall come to the point of comparison how it matters
What soil they have used black or red. Red soil if they use it is more strength and bricks colour will be more red
How they dry it in shades without exposing to sunlight as this can create cracks if not dried under shades for a week prior burning
Third is how they will burn it using wooden waste pieces or coal. Coal is much better due to heat resistant and heat it produces is much better hence costly. Burnt in wood you get 50 paise or 25 paise less than coal burnt one
How to test the quality of bricks
--------------------------------------
Hold the bricks in left hand on the top like hanging and use your right hand fingers folded and knock the centre and edge of the brick and it should make "Tan" "Tan" kind of noise than "Buck" "Buck" noise. more you get Tan Tan sound it is burnt effectively. Ex: Pot makes ton ton sound same logic applied here
Secondly take some random samples from factory (not the one you get from Sales person who comes and gives to your site) and dip in wate for 24 hrs. Remove after 24hrs and hold about 5 Ft ht on tar road and leave the bricks on road. It should not break at the centre but it can break at the edges.
Where to use Wirecut Bricks
--------------------------------
Good for Chamber purpose and water tank due to low absorption of water and good life
Harder and can be used for wall purpose (Take the ones which are meant for consturction purpose which means exact size and roughness on all 6 sides should be there). These ones costs anywhere from 5.75-7 Rs max
Costlier ones and can be used for decorative purpose. typically it will be around 10-15 rs. Used for external facing walls without plastering etc
Hope this helps.
Regards
Guru

Hand mould may be bit more stronger by 2-3% but it will have more bends compared to table mould due to hand holding procedure involved.
Another important thing forgot to update to the group was on the Bricks will have bend properties depending on the sand they use and how that sand will behave under heating treatment conditions. This is beyond the quality control of manufacturers most of the time. so check brikcs on all corners and see the straight line you can see else it will be bend and consure more cement during plastering and during construction as well.
Wirecut bricks while consturcting if they do the straight line measurement using threads on both sides will save lot of plastering thickness comapred to normal redbricks.
Hope this helps.

Thanks guru for valuable information.
One more thing to add here, To identify whether red brick is coal burned or not , break the brick in two parts and observe side , if it is coal burned , it will be red deep otherwise outer portion will be red and inner will be still be not baked.

Hi,
I would tell you how to identify wood burning vs coal burning bricks.
Wood burnt
The color of the bricks would be bright red/orange and would have very very less deposition of ash power or ash deposition maybe nil.
Mostly Wood burnt bricks are also called naati bricks /country bricks made in open area under sun in fields.
Coal Burnt
The color of bricks would be whitish red as there would be coal ash deposition.
Coal is mostly used only in chamber/klin burnt bricks.
Types of Bricks and quality.(Rates increases based on specification at Ex. factory)
Naati Bricks/ country bricks : Rs.3.00/brick (Ex. factory)
Specification:
Drying In open space under sun.
Burnt in wood/ eucalyptus leaf / Rice husk.
Box Bricks-1: Rs.3.25/brick (Ex. factory)
Specification:
Drying done in drying sheds
Burnt in Kiln, only wood/ eucalyptus leaf / Rice husk.
Box Bricks-2 : Rs.3.75/brick (Ex. factory)
Specification:
Drying done in drying sheds
Burnt in Kiln, Only in coal
Table mold Bricks: Rs.4.50/brick (Ex. factory)
Specification:
Drying done in drying sheds.
Burnt in Kiln, Only in coal
Table mold Chamber Bricks: Rs.5.00/brick (Ex. factory)
Specification:
Drying done in drying sheds.
Burnt in Chamber, Only in coal.
Wire cut Bricks(Non-elevation): Rs.6.00/brick (Ex. factory)
Specification:
Drying done in drying sheds.
Burnt in Chamber, Only in coal.
Wire cut Bricks(Non-elevation-lined): Rs.6.25/brick (Ex. factory)
Specification:
Drying done in drying sheds.
Burnt in Chamber, Only in coal.
Wire cut Bricks(Elevation Grade-2): Rs.8/brick (Ex. factory)
Specification:
Drying done in drying sheds.
Burnt in German Kiln, coal and wood.
Wire cut Bricks(Elevation Grade-1): Rs.14/brick (Ex. factory)
Specification:
Drying done in drying sheds.
Burnt in German Kiln, coal and wood.
The brick buyers/home builders should ask for the above specifications from the vendor before they purchase.
If there is any changes in the specification from the seller kindly cross question them.
Every type of bricks mentioned above has change in their compressive strength and water absorption.
Some of the reputed and standard manufactures in Bangalore are
Swamy chamber Bricks (SCB),
Sri Venkaterswara Bricks - Kudul gate(SVB),
Srinsagar Chamber Bricks (SSB),
Bindu Brick Industries (BBI). Etc
The above manufacturers are brick market giants manufacturing throughout the year. i.e 365days.
Please note there is duplicate's in brands in above names by some cheap manufactures, while you buy ask for their brand, full company name, profile and place of manufacturing.
Hope the above note will give you much better idea of different types of bricks.
For any doubts
Thank you regards

Yes Mr.Bushan Box Brick are hand mold.
Klin based burning are mostly used by box brick manufacturers, so box bricks burnt in coal are kiln burnt, whereas table molded are mostly burnt in chamber except very few.
For SCB, find on Just dial
For SSB, find in google
For SVB, no details as its marketed by agents
For BBI , no details as its marketed by agents

Mr Moorthy and mybdasites friends,
I am constructing a house and my engineer has plans to use bricks with the brand STB. Currently this is supposed to use for the Sump purpose. I saw the bricks and was extremely unhappy about it. It has no consistency in the colour, or edges, so many cracks, many chipped.
I need your URGENT help to please let me know the quality of these bricks by seeing the attached photos. I need urgent help please. I do not want to go to Civil aid again for checking the quality of the bricks. Pleas help me here.
Please correct my observations if I am wrong.
