Wooden flooring

Dear members,
I have a few doubts about the use of wood for flooring. I have looked up the archives for similar discussions, but I still had a few doubts. Hope you will be able to help me.
From the information I have, wooden flooring can be broadly categorized into three classes:
1. Solid hardwood flooring
2. Parquet flooring
3. Laminated wooden flooring (Pergo etc.)
The first category is the best in class and also the most expensive (above Rs. 350/-). The second category (Parquet) is also made of real wood, but with smaller pieces put together and is thinner (around 12mm). I believe this is priced around Rs. 200/- . The third category is not real wood, but is the most cost-effective one. I hope my understanding is correct, please correct me if otherwise.
We are considering wooden flooring of categories (1) and (2) and I have the following doubts related to these,
a. How susceptible are these to water and scratches? Generally, wooden flooring is considered hard to maintain, is it because of scratches or sensitivity to water or other reasons?
b. We are considering wooden flooring for bedrooms and the family room. Can wooden flooring sustain the traffic of these areas?
c. What is the general lifetime of wooden flooring, considering that category (1) and (2) can be re-polished a few times?
Wooden flooring looks very nice and Parquet flooring seems priced reasonably (as compared to granite), but wooden flooring is always mentioned to have maintenance issues. I request you to please share your views, knowledge and experiences in this regard.
Thanks in advance.
