Sump Design

Post by aries31 »

Hi All,

I am planning my sump as follows:
2x5000L sumps interconnected by a valve for receiving Kaveri water.
1x10000L sump for rainwater storage.
All these three are isolated from each other with walls in between and a valve controlling the water flow

Assuming, the roof and terrace are kept clean, Please share your opinion on:

1. Is it safe to mix RW and kaveri? We will route this through a RO filter (ZeroB or some such) before using for consumption. Washing machine, toilets etc. get it direct from OH tank

2. Any comments on the capacity? This is for a family of 4. My usage calculation is about 500L /day with some of kitchen waste water used for gardening

3. The sumps will be below carpark (19x18). Is there a problem with MS covers over sumps such as insect and unwanted dirt entering the sumps? Are there any gasketted lockable sump covers available? Any better designs?

4. What is the running cost of RWH filter?

Regards
Anand

Hi Anand,
I feel 20,000 lts stroage is too much for residential purpose.
Daily usage of water per person is around 150lts.
If you are parking your car over the sump water leakage can start over time due to weight movement and hence you would need to construct sump with full concrete.
You can go for one 7k cauvery and one 3k lts sump for RWH
Rainwater carries air pollution, not that cauvery water doesnt carry, but i feel it is better to use it only for cleaning house, car etc.,
