Hi,
What software is generally used in building a 3D model by Architects. Is it available in Bangalore.
Regards,
Venky

several available - the most commonly used by architects is AutoCAD that costs upto $5000. But cheaper ones can be used for your visualization (they are not as rich in features as CAD/CAM types). Some are ChiefArchitect, Broderbund, PUnchsoftware etc. Check it out. I have even seen some online tools to do this (don't have links to them).

Yes AutoCAD is awfully expensive and probably not needed for us "try things out" to get a feel of the house.
I am using Sweet Home 3D from this link

Its a free software and one can evaluate how good (awful) one's imagination is

As mentioned you can use sweet home 3d for floor visualizations. If you want elevation then you can use google sketch up, it very easy to learn and use. Here are some of the elevations i did for my house

If you are looking for only 2D editing then you can use Draftsight which is alternative to auto cad -
http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/overview/
It runs on linux and windows. I do minor modifications in draftsight.
Any other tool for that matter the learning curve is quite high compared to google sketchup.
If you want to grab some readily available plans check -

THanks Guys. I am using Sweet Home 3D the problem with it is multiple floor cannot be done and the furniture models seems to be oversized. So, was not sure what to use.

Venkyn,
You can do Plan-> Add level to add a new floor. And to use 3D View -> Display all levels or Display selected level.
For oversized furniture you double click and modify the properties like Width/Depth/height ....
For staircases if its not displayed at right height, you can change the Ëlevation"
