My contractor says , the sand filtering ,using a sieve, will be done only for plastering . Is it true? I thought we need to do the sieve'ing , of sand, for roofing.
Thanks,

How does your contractor plan to remove impurities such as shells, pebbles, etc. Or is he not using river sand?

For the roofs, people normally go for a coarse sand. Filter sand is used for brick laying & plastering. If you use filtered sand for roofing, cement absorption is quite high.

Is the filter sand not good for construction? , esp for roof. as the source of sand may not the river.
So, river sand is always better.

Hi,
What is a filtered sand ?
In the sand quarry sand will be filtered during that time we will get a dust kind of material which is called filtered sand or dust.
How to identify Sand is good or not ?
Take little sand in your hand fold it with your fingers open your hands and drop the sand you can see some particals will be struck to your hand those are dust (no weight objects)
if you find dust is more then its filter sand mixed with river sand.
Note: Pure River sand will also have dust but its should be less then 5 to 7 %.
In the first look if you can fix Pebbles and shell be happy that you have got a good material ; People will get the filter sand and add pebbles, shell and say its pure sand.
be aware of it.
