Check this out... I had a similar question.
I think it is okay to use ceramic tiles classified as "flooring tiles" for residences. Also Ceramic flooring tiles come in much better designs & colors than their vitrified counterparts.

Yes you are right- i went to one house that is 10 years old they have put these bright ceramic tiles for flooring - they look very majestic .I have decided to got for it.I don't believe architects as they always give costlier and stupid ideas. Not all of them but 80% of them.

Hi Sudhu Kumar,
Ceramic tiles are substitute for vitrified tiles , but not for other flooring .Both vitrified and ceramic tiles are used for Apartment, commercial building and for those houses which will be rented and not for own house since they chip very fast while moving heavy items like fridge ,bed , sofa etc..
Few architect’s suggest for red oxide and other flooring which are not costlier.

check out kajaria, nitco etc. they all carry both vitrified and ceramic.
Ceramic look as good as vitrified when all in good shape. but once they chip, you can see the different base colour (since ceramic only has colour for the top 1mm or so). But if the vitrified chips, then the colour difference is not visible (as the colour is through and through). and the other fact that vitrified tiles are burnt / polished slightly differently, they don't chip as easily.
