While constructing sump keep this points in mind. Dont make hurry in constructing sump, instead of square corners use Octagon shape (not exactly like Octagon, just in corners) Don't fill the tank with doing proper packing at outside. While packing the outside pour as much as water you can to fill the mud. Instead of normal bricks use chamber bricks, In sump construction little things can make big difference

Guys,
I a starting sump construction tomorrow. Since I didn't want to go below footing, we decided to do a 20 x 6 feet sump with a depth of 6 feet. Please advice on any precautions.

We are going for bricks wall and will be laying a lintel at three feet height.

Thnx

Hi mudude12,
Are you planning for a 20000 litre sump?? calculate your need and why aren't you opting for a RCC sump as the capacity is more?
Lintel is used not to crush the windows/doors and any other openings in the wall. I did not understand why it is used in sump? Sump is all inside earth and very difficult to repair later on so better choose RCC.
Thanks,

Hi,

Yes, we may be able accumulate water only upto a height of 5 feet because of the water connection pipe. So around 15000 lets will be stored. This much is needed because the building would have Six units. We didn't go for RCC because of cost implications and also because it is not deep. We put almost 5 inches of 40 mm pcc at the bottom yest. Today another 3-4 inches of 20 mm pcc. The lintel is only to add support to the 20 feet long wall. Adding upto 5 lts of dr fixit for 20 mm pcc and during plastering. I feel this should be good enough.

Thnx

Hi Mudude,
let us know the updates of your sump. I would also like to see how this idea works. Supervise the complete work of sump as masons will neglect some small yet important things.
Thanks,

Sure. Brick work will be done today. I purchased charcoal burnt bricks for this purpose. Marginally costlier but better. Karur sand. Chicken mesh and PVC steps are ready.

One more thing. In one corner I have dug another 3 x 3 ft of dept 1 feet for the submersible pump. This way we can make use of the entire capacity.

Good after thought. I did not make that deep corner for submersible pump. Now I have to plan something to use up all water in sump.
Thanks,
