Please give some inputs about the following:
1. Cost of maintaining a borewell over a period of 20 years or so. I heard every 5-6 years we have to do de-silting of it.
2. Is Borewell really required at all if we get Cauvery water twice a week and provide a 15K (or so) liter of sump tank.
3. Provide RWH (Rain Water Harvesting) and providing facility to re-use rain water. If anyone are using Rain water for gardening etc effectively please let me know.
4. Is it true that if we do RWH, borewell gets silt quickly?
5. What is the cost of Borewll vs Sump Tank?

Borewell maintenance differs from case to case. Some people may get issues quite frequently, some may not even after a decade. Depends on the Quality of Soil, depth, Material used, Submerciable Pump ....etc.
If there are multiple units in the same building, based on the number of headcount, the water consumption challenges the sump storage capacity. Remember, more than 100 BBMP wards are waiting for Cauvery water after completion of 4th Stage of Water piping from Cauvery which is expected to be completed by end of this year. Hence it can't give atleast 1X7 water solution for bangalroeans. Moreover Bangalore is an ever growing city with already nearly 1 crore population for which just one water source is not enough. Having backup water option is a longterm independent solution, where you can save water and also lessen burden for your pocket and help your society. Anyway RWH is mandatory for all new buidings. Alongwith it Having Borewell is also a good option.
RWH can be implemented in various modes, it need not be directly connected to your Borewell and face silting problem in the long term.
Regarding your last point, Initial Cost of Borewell is more vs Sump talk either 5 to 15 times more based on the ground water availability. But Sump tank is only a storage option, doesn't generate water on its own when you need it.

Hi msn1270, Thanks a lot for valuable reply. With very high cost of construction, I was considering various cost saving options - appears that it is not such a nice one.
