How to specify bricks?

Hi friends,
I am discussing with a contractor for constructing residential building Stilt + 2 floors) in Chennai.
He is quoting around Rs 1400 per sft. Now I do not know how to specify Bricks and sand? also how to check their quality during actual construction. Any suggestions is welcome.

If you are looking for cement blocks, you can specify the brands like APCO...in case of red bricks also, there are some good brands like SCB...
