Solid cement blocks v/s Red bricks ...

Post by wondercupid »

I believe there is a thread already discussed on this topic. It is said that Red bricks are the better option in many ways though it's little expensive and time-consuming. My question is that, if we opt for column based construction, there no need to go for red bricks? I was told that since column is bearing the complete weight, the walls are just for covering purpose and so there is no need to waste money on red bricks. Can anyone please comment on this statement? Thanks.

I think it doesn't matter, you can construct load baring wall with both red brick and solid blocks, similarly for column construction you can go for either solid block or red brick,
Keep in mind, for contractor, it is advantage to use solid block as work gets done faster and they save on cement during plastering, if you decide for solid block ensure you too are gaining on these benefits.

Decide on advantage that you will get if you for particular type of brick, in below discussion you see ppl feel red brick is better

Personally I too feel red bricks are better and I have decided for the same

i agree with maheshv

im using 6inches solid blocks for my house n there is always pros n cons in all the things similarly in cement n red bricks
since im using it want to share few facts

i have seen few houses most of the contractors (sale building n apartments) use solid blocks it works for them in all the way
n for own use people use red bricks

advantages of cement blocks
1) time saving mean saving money on labour
2)defenitely cost efective local blocks rs 25 to 28 n branded apco 35+
3)consumtion of cement and sand is less (column ,beams, wall )

disadvantage
1)people say it saves time i personally dont think so coz each day u can only raise wall up to 3 or 4 feet not more than that wher as in brick u can raise the wall up to lintel level in a day (labour will be more if u go for red bricks thats )
2)though it is cost efective but u will not get good quality blocks ...apco will provide certification i guess n local r useless no curing n no proper cement ...they dont maintain the quality ....each load will be diff only first load u get good blocks after that its same
3) generates heat in summer season
my masonry has two project
1 is 6inches blocks ( our house) and other is our dad friend building he is using red bricks

i often visit that construction building also ..so i know the actual diff
n 1 more point is that in 6inches block cunsumes more steel compare to red bricks ...heavy rods for column n beams ....i will check the structural details n tell u the diff

overall it is 10 to 15% more if u go for red bricks

if it is a own house n not for renting ...it is best to go for red bricks even a decent quality red brick is better than any solid blocks

Just to add one more point , people are going for Solid cement blocks for Space saving too, with a normal red bricks wall thinkness will by 9" and with the Cement bricks its should be 6" + plastering thickness. So overall there can be Space saving.

Right now i came to know that there are 6" ( 6"w and 2" h ) Red brick is also available ; do any one tried this brick ?

There is also an option of 8" solid cement blocks. My architect recommended the use of 8" blocks, but we eventually went for red bricks, as most of the people we knew had opted for red bricks.

Any Good place to source redbricks in and around bangalore.
Near tumkur, just after sidangangamutt, I saw these bricks were made everywhere, I don't know who cares about the quality?

Just my personal opinion based on my research:
If you are looking for good quality bricks, you can either go for SCB (a slight delay due to huge demand at times) or SRT bricks. (1-3 days advance notice is sufficient).
A little bit cheaper options are MBT or SVB bricks.

Where do you get SCB and SRT bricks?

Where do you get MBT and SVB bricks?

If you are talking about some branded ones do share where it is available ,as currently i am using some local bricks but have seen SVB locally made? . Are you referring to some SVB which has chain of shops everywhere ?

Be careful about SVB, there seems to be many avatars of it.
I was recommended to use SVB and my sand supplier said
he can deliver them. Much after the delivery, I came to know
that the SVB bricks he had delivered were not the real SVB
(whatever they may be) but some imitation ones.

You can try to contact the following numbers for SCB & SRT bricks:
SCB - +(91)-(80)-25611611, 25610910
SRT - 9008546244 (Cheluveraj)

In case you require the number for MBT, I need to search for their visiting card. (misplaced it somewhere, but I hope to find it). SVB, i have lost the contact number.
