Hello,
I want to know is it possible to convert the existing house in the first floor into a duplex. Is there a way that the Roof can be cut and the stairs can be accomodated from inside the building? If yes, is it safe for the building to cut the RCC? What would be the additional costs that would be incurred for this? Please let me know if some one has done this.
Thanks
Yogi

HI yogi,
Yes you can do it,given that the structural grid is feasible for it.Check if you have a near by beam or column so that new beams to support the cut portion of the slab.
Its recommended for metal stairs rather than concrete to reduce self load of the structure.Use a proper RCC cut machine than a vibrator ,it cuts slab neat and doesn't damage the other portions.
Additional works
When you cut the slab the whole flooring below and above need to be changed or reworked.
Electrical connections need to re routed if the main line is running in the same slab.
Need to provide ISMC beams to support the cut slab

Re: Coverting the existing first floor house into duplex
Yogi,
You need to approach someone who uses Power tools to cut the RCC roof rather than conventional Demolishing method to ensure the life of the remaining part of your building. Similar method was used in the Public Utility building where the Fire exit staircase was created as per fire and Safety department recommendation.
Based on the existing design and the supporting/load bearing walls, the redesign of the next floor needs considerable rework and some times it may not look aesthetically matching. you may have to compromise in this part. Also whole rework needs considerable investment. As suggested by Praveen, Metal staircase is recommended for the interconnectivity.
Last But not least, if your current house is old one(Say more than 20 years old), better to demolish it completely and do the new construction as per your choice.
