Dear Members,
For my backyard garden of size 12x20 ft, Im planning for Glass pergola on MS steel framework. Has anyone gone through this? Usually I see people use this for their balcony. I dont know how useful and attractive it would be for garden. What size of glass should I use?
Request your suggestions. Also please share such vendors details if you have.

Hi Dilip
If you are planning for glass pergola in the garden, you need to make sure existing conditions are considered for the same.
1. Garden with a large tree will shed a lot of leaves on the glass that needs constant cleaning, otherwise they form hard marks
2. Glass pergola will transfer a lot of heat during sunny times, it's not recommended unless you are using it during early morning and evening only.
3. Access to clean glass is a must, you can't clean the glass just by pouring water on it. It needs wipers cleaning like our car windshield to keep it clean all the time.
4. For a size of 12x20' you can go for 4' grid on 12' side and 20' side can be done with two glasses of 4'x10' ( special glass ) each.
5. You need to use 12mm sandwich reflective glass with reflective surface facing sky so that heat transfer can be reduced. Make sure the reflective surface won't reflect all the glare into your balcony or windows of your or neighbors home.
6. These are executed by MS fabricators or SS fabricators. Professional metal fabricators are aware of handling glass. Don't go for multiple agencies as you will end up with painful coordination and finally you need to take it all burnt.
7. Maintaining a good slope for water to drain is a must, otherwise it will lead to formation of moss during rainy seasons and silicon joints will fail eventually.

Well I have 3 skylights and one stone pargola in my house so qualified to comment. Since there is not much difference between skylight and paragola except support poles I can recommend same vendor.
My personal suggestion is for stone paragola with glass sheet only on the area directly above your main door /sitout /porch. instead of MS + glass on whole 12'x20'
First things first ask yourself why you want to cover whole garden area in glass pargola. may be just put on sitout area and leave rest as is
Coming back to your question the MS frame skylights with powder costing were done for me by Madhu indusries they also did UPVC work for me. They have done it in powder costed MS frame with 10mm toughned glass one was 12 ' x 7' so done with 3 pieces of 4' x7 ' glass sheets with silicon joint in between. Other 2 are of size 4' x6' and 5 ' circular.
I would suggest that don't go for loacal fabricators as finish never matches
Stone paragola is done at main gate in garden. size of paragola is 10' × 9' with two 8 inch square stone pillors one one side and 8 inch stone beams rested with steel brackets in RCC columns of wall of other and 7 stone perlinsm Glass is on 9' x 6' area
Total cost was approximately 1.25 lakhs.
In this case paragola was dine by ine vendor and glass sheet by another.
10mm toughned saint gobain glass costed me 285/- per square feet (+ transport &fitting ) since both stone and glass work was in bulk unable to give you exact breakup..
