Beam depth Standard/Thumb Rule?

Hi,

In my ongoing home construction, I see spans of around 22ft. But the structual drawing is suggesting only 18inch beam depth - 6inch inside slab, 12inch outside of slab. I'm trying to understand is this enough? Any references in this aspect will be helpful...
